are all taxes due up front? or are they included in the monthly payments. The reason I ask is if all paid up front what happens, God forbid, the car is totaled after a month lease starts. what happens to the tax paid for months going forward, can they be reimbursed or are they lost?

Tax payments are completely dictated by the state you register in, assuming you are registering in FL, the tax on a lease is paid monthly instead of up front so this scenario shouldn't be much of a concern for you (most states operate this way). Some states like NJ, NY and TX collect sales tax up front and once tax is paid, it is gone - however some states like NJ (not NY) do offer partial tax refunds when transferring to other states, but I do not believe this qualifies for total losses.

Now there is still some tax due up front on these leases if in a state like FL with monthly lease tax, this is because rebates are typically taxed and certain fees also are taxed up front separately.

With all of that said, that is technically what is "due" but you can structure however you wish generally speaking, so you can roll in most of that due at signing amount and just pay your first payment for example, with the trade off of a higher payment of course.

I hope that helps clarify!

I am in the great state of NY :(
Well I wouldn't say this is a reason not to lease or buy a car, yes you are exposed to some greater risk due to the tax methods, but this can go for buying anything that is taxable, at least with a lease you are being taxed on the portion of depreciation, not the residual portion, if you bought a car first you would pay tax up front on the whole car purchase.

Additionally, after some reading, it seems that NY insurance companies are required to include sales tax if they total loss a vehicle, so it seems you have some ability to recoup in a loss situation. Contrary to popular belief, you are technically entitled to any positive equity just as much as you are responsible for negative equity in the event of a total loss on a lease. Whether or not that plays out in your favor in real world, that is a matter of circumstance.

Thanks

Does mazda include GAP coverage on their lease like Honda does?
Unfortunately, since Mazda switched to Toyota as their lender in April 2020, they have made GAP an optional coverage (same with Toyota/Lexus). Most of our clients do not opt for it anyways as most feel the discounts hedge them enough into an equitable position for low risk, however GAP coverage is available which will vary by dealer, and often insurance companies do offer GAP insurance as well.
