Auto Day/Night Brightness?

2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring w/ Tech Package
Greetings,

I've searched the forums for my issue below, but I only came across some threads about the mirror.

I have a 2012 (or is it 2013? I dunno - the first year the CX-5s came out) Touring with the technology package, so it has the navigation system and such. I noticed in the display settings there are three options: "day," "night," and "auto" that, presumably, control the display brightness/contrast.

For the past year, I've had it set to "auto" and was none the wiser until, randomly, I tried a few nights ago to see what the "night" setting was like. What a difference! I'm no longer blinded <exaggeration> by the display, especially if I'm using the navigation at night.

My question is - shouldn't the "auto" setting in the display detect that it's dark out and lower the brightness accordingly? There's no difference between "day" and "auto" from what I can tell.

In full transparency, I haven't read the manual about this so if there's something I'm missing in there, let me know. Thanks.

Yes it should but I change it manually because on cloudy days you can get false readings resulting in night mode cutting in and out.

You really should read the manual. As the link that HoustonCX5 provided says, there is a knob on the dash that adjusts the brightness of the dash. This is probably the same knob you push to reset the mileage trip odometer. If it is turned to the right it locks the dash brightness full. That also turns the display on day mode. Turning this one click left turns the auto feature on.

I have struggled with this as well. I am often using this switch to toggle back and forth so as to not be blinded during the early morning commute, but then I struggle to see the text at dusk. Not a major annoyance though.

OP just a note when you set up you day/night themes make sure you actually pick a darker night theme as you toggle through both choices. This could be why you haven't noticed a difference, since it is possible to set both themes the same.
