ATX P5 Turbo Build by Richs970

Good to know. I'll keep it wrapped in cardboard as long as possible during the install then. I was planning on keepin the grill in anyway. Trying to stay as aesthetically low profile as I can for now.
You had your car broken into right. I think I remember you saying that some retards jumped on your hood and roof a while back? I got broken into last New Years eve, got the window replaced, replaced all the electronics they stole (two amps and an Alpine HU), and drove up to Hunter to go skiing and realized only after a week and 300mi or so that the asshole that broke in actually dropped his crackpipe in my car and it was still there wedged in between the carpet and the plastic panel on the passenger side, lol. Thank god I didn't get pulled over....

dam, just saw this sorry, but yea man, my car was broken in to in march and they stole some random s*** but i got it all replaced and no repeat yet (crosses fingers)
sorry to hear about your car, ill never understand people who destroy other peoples property, and thts ****** crazy about the crack pipe lol

but anywho, good luck with the build man, it's going to be worth it

Got alot done today. Put the MBSP back on after getting my second bung welded in for the Doc B Oil Return. Put on the oil pan, exhaust mani, s-pipe, ebay J/Midpipe, put inserts in both side mounts, put the intake mani back on. I also finished wiring up all the gauges. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

I wound up just plugging the extra barb on the MSP banjo that I had, since it fit and I didn't want to wait for ATP to send me one. Crossing my fingers that doesn't leak.

Bigest things I have left are the intercooler and piping, and the Begi. Anyone know of a good place to mount the Begi. It's gotta go on the fuel return line, so, after the stock PRV. Not really many places it can go, so I'm going to have to get creative for that I guess.

Looking good man!! You should check mine out I'm about at the same point as you. I like where your mounting your bov

I'm hooking up my FM voltage clamp tomorrow and I'm not sure which wires to tap at the ECU. According to the wiring diagram it looks like it's the pink/blue wire going into pin 60 for the signal wire. Anyone know if this is right. I searched, and I can't find anything specific to the P5 or any protege for that matter.

Yea that is the primary o2 sensor, that is correct.

As for your recent pictures, the install looks clean. It is coming along.

Great build.By the way that midpipe will rub on the crossmember sometime's might wanna do something about that while the car's up.I need to work on it also.just a heads up.

dam nice man! your build is coming along
i really like that piping kit you have there, i might have to buy that kit once i get some extra cash

I cannot believe I did not see this thread before. I just read through all of it and can't wait for you to join the turbo atx family.

Couple of pointers. For the fuel line, I don't have any clue as to whether it is 5/16's or 3/8 originally but 3/8 worked much better for me. 5/16 would rip every time from being too tight over the fitting and would develop a fuel leak. It also TORE UP my hands from how many times i redid it. I bought 3/8 and problem solved. No leaks, fits good.

Lentech valve body is a very very good investment. I plan on actually purchasing a full transmission from them down the road but the valve body does wonders. I don't have a tiptronic but the shifts were so much better after it.

Solder your connections for the voltage clamp. Trust me. If the voltage clamp and begi are hooked up right, you will be dipping into the 10-12 region on the afr during boost. If you are not, recheck everything. I spent about a week getting afr's as high as 17 before I figured out the connection for the clamp wasn't good. I never even went into boost with the exception of a couple times during that period but I think it still did not do good things to the car. Don't make the same mistake I did.

Lastly, do NOT and I emphasize NOT put the petal to the floor and go WOT all the time. For a few weeks, it will be ok and it will feel amazing because the car pulls like crazy. THe downside is that your transmission WILL start slipping. I have a big ass transmission cooler AND the lentech vb but I was stupid and now at WOT, the trans will slip and I'll get no power to the wheels. You can drive it aggressively but don't drive too aggressively.

If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me.

Best of luck with the rest of your build!

I'll have to respond to the last couple posts cause I have some responses, but on to important business first.

I started her up today. She started right up, idled well for a while. Once my oil pressure leveled out and I let her run for a while in the garage, I went for a spin. After going around a couple turns slow and babying her, I got to a straight away and gave it a little gas. I could hear the turbo hissing and spooling up, and it just started to pull when my BOV exploded up into the air (lol!) and the vac line held on and it whipped back in to the engine bay and crashed into the valve cover (still had my hood off).....So I got her home and realized I lost the O ring for the BOV flange.

So my first impression is that the c-clip wasn't secured enough into the groove in the flange.

But also, I didn't see my boost gauge moving at all. It was just sitting completely still on (straight down). So I'm worried that I'm not getting any vacuum to my vac block or something. Maybe that explains why the BOV didn't release the pressure buildup. So I have to somehow check to see if the boost gauge is working properly.

the c-clip isn't so bad, when I installed my HKS i simply used a clamp to hold down the bov to the pipe.

The gasket has to compress in order for the clip to seat, making a good seal.

I see that you went with a vac block, did you put it on the right side of the check valve in the brake booster line?

Also as fishdonotbounce mentioned. the Lentech is well worth the investment. and even though he says not to beat on it.. do it... i do all the time and my tranny is only partially destroyed :p

in all seriousness, look up the electrical line pressure modifier, it's for the focus, but any increase in line pressure will be worth it, or you'll be chewing through the tranny in no time.

Also i'd look into good atf, and a atf temp guage.

welcome to the atx boost club. did you know with the atx you don't loose boost between shifts? :D

also a little late, but i think the ssqv uses a rubber/silicone type of diaphram, it's pretty close to the heat shield there.

and should you feel the need to upgrade in the near future, some things to keep in mind.

The ssafc will not work with the maf in blow through setup without 440cc injectors. the ecu will fuel cut hard! and throw code p103 maf input high.

you can clock the turbo and save yourself almost 2' of piping.

you can run the piping on either side of the radiator by cutting holes around it (thin sheet metal)

Makes sense, I'm going to try to use the clamp.

Yeah that check valve surprised me. I put the vac block on the manifold side of the check valve. Is that the right side?

I planned on getting a LVB but I haven't had the cash recently. Hopefully I'll be able to get one in the near future though.

Thanks for all the good info. I gotta head out to work, but I'll keep updating, and hopefully next weekend when I get back to my garage, I'll have her up and running.

Welcome to the turboed auto trans club. There are only a few of us that I know of. Been turboed for two years now and its great. I have shocked a few msp owners out there with my setup. But dont race from stop light to stop light. I suggest royal purple atf, a good trans cooler like a b&m and the lentech vb is a must. Also I am a mechanic so any questions please feel free.

Wow awesome. A local mechanic with a P5T ATX. That's like a dream come true, lol. What shop do you work at. I'm in SI all the time.

Any idea why my BOV might have launched off the flange first time I boosted. I'm assuming the c-clip was just not exactly right, but something tells me there could be a bigger issue that's responsible.

I have a B&M cooler and I just haven't decided where I'm going to put it. You hav eany pictures?

Its not a p5, its a sedan, es model. I work for avis rent a car in newark nj. But i do side work at my house.
I say recheck that clip first. If not seated correctly, the bov will definitely fly off once boost pressure is rushing past it.
No pics of the trans cooler installed. But I have it installed infront of the a/c condenser. I used those wire ties the cooler comes with to attach it to condenser. Then just ran lines to trans.
There is a mazda meet every friday in woodbridge nj rt1 dunkin donuts. There is a thread for it in the meets section. I can see my car in person. I won't be there this friday though. But if u want to see my setup, we can meet there.

Hi guys!
I still have most of my parts together for my build (also ATX turbo P5 but with sport shift), T3/T4 Precision turbo.
I also have a Lentech torque converter and a Derale trans cooler ready for the build up. I would love to do the Alto rebuild at the same time!
I have been wondering about placement to route all the piping/coolers.
My setup is different due to the Hiboost manifold is already opposite orientation and my I.C. has rear facing end tanks.
I am also putting a crapload of other stuff in (AWR pan, DocB pump/Ext PRV/oil filter relocate, CS rad and my 505 IM)
I run an AEM F/IC and a worked 626 head and cams.

Did u guys run stock fuel rails?
I have 440s in my 626 rail/mani.
