So to anyone that changes their oil on their MSP. What oil filter do you guys get? I was just curious since im doing my first oil change on this car this weekend.

Okay...

You will get a million responses to this thread, I would imagine. I use the standard Mazda OEM filter that comes on the car, and I change my oil with MOBIL 1 (5 w30). It doesn't need to be any more complicated than that. How often do I change my oil? Every 5,000 miles. Simple. When using this quality of oil, every 5,000 (or 4,000) is frequent enough.

LOL... I was referring only to the filter. Of course theres tons of posts on oil brand preferences. I just wanted to know what was available other than the stock OEM filter. When I was looking at parts stores online, I think they only offered like Fram, STP and that overpriced premium K&N. But thanks for the info AGR:)

are the mazdaspeed and the regular 2.0l filters the same, reason i ask is because i use a PureOne Purolater (sp?) synthetic filter. I know when i looked in the pureone book the other day it had two different listings for the 02 p5, and one of them was unreleased yet, and under the 03 p5 they had a part number and it was the same as the unreleased 02 p5 filter. I would think it would be the same though. its a part #14622 i think. Its even blue to match the car!lol Good luck though. I have used mobil one filters and i thought about a K&N, but i have had too much good luck with the PureOne.

Yeah I use the Pureone on the Probe. Its a good filter. But since its the same block, wouldnt it be the same?

I use the Bosch...Actually the one on right now is the first time using it. I'll probably be changing it tomorrow, so if there are any problems with the filter I'll be sure to let you all know.

You know one thing that I dont understand or I guess I have never heard of is when people drive their car for 4,000 to 5,000 miles and then change the oil and filter. I change my oil every 2,500 miles. I use sythetic oil too. 4,000 to 5,000 just seems too long to stay in the car, and I am also getting my oil changed this weekend, taking it to the dealer, got a free oil change.

You know one thing that I dont understand or I guess I have never heard of is when people dirve their car for 2,500 miles and then change the oil and filter. Jesus, don't you think that's a bit much? I mean hell, I only want the best for my car, but with the amount of driving I do, I'd be changing oil every week and a half with that kinda schedule. Then again, you mentioned you get your oil changed for free at the dealer, so I'm assuming they don't care doing it but I'm also assuming they're putting the regular oil in there or a cheap synthetic.

Wow. Every 2,500 miles... I applaud you for taking care of your car but IMO, that's a bit too early.

Then again, there are the "how you drive", "where you drive", "how much stress you put on the engine" factors that maybe I don't know about.

i use redline 15w-50 it says its good for up to 18,000 miles. But the filter you should still change at every 3,000. I dont think i could ever leave it in there that long. I'll probally change around 3-4k

The filter for the Protege/MSP 2.0 FS engine is a smaller filter than the one for the 626. I use the 626 simply because its larger.

I generally go 5,000 miles between changes on my truck, running full synthetic. Been doing every 3,000 on the MSP, until I use up my free dealer oil changes.

Unless you are really hard on the engine, drive in dusty/dirt road conditions or extreme heat situations, a "daily driver" should be able to go 5,000 miles between changes running a full synthetic oil.

I've got a 1994 Chevy truck with 180,000 miles. Been running synthetic (Castrol) in it since it was new, changing every 5,000 miles. Doesn't burn oil and runs as good as it did the day I bought it.

Tease, I change my oil that often because I usually dont put that many miles on the car. I think I might put about 3,000 miles on the car in about 2 months. I am in school so I try and walk to class, and even if I drive it is only a few miles a day. But you have a very valid point, and that is why I said I have never really heard of people doing an oil change at that certain milage. I am not trying to say that you guys that change your oil at 4,000 miles are wrong. And I only have one free oil change at the dealer, and I dont know what kind oil they will put in there, hopefully something quality.
