ATF at 18k Miles.

Service writer tells me there is no drain plug for the auto tranny.

LOL! (nuts) crazy talk ! LOL! Buahahahaha!

I decided not to argue with him as he is very combative for some reason.

I'm trying to decide if I'll try the partial drain/refill however much comes back out, or the transmission pump method. I know on a Mazda 5 forum site, one poster had good pics on doing that method.

Just drain and fill.

Peace!(rei)

where is the drain plug located?

Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left. Peek into the front side of the fenderwell and look at the bottom of the transmission pan. The drain plug is on the pan right where the service manager says it didn't exist.

I've always had trouble with the service writers at my Mazda. I have great service guys over at Acura, but that doesn't help me with my Mazda.

Two questions...

So I'm assuming Mazda M-V ATF?...not Mercon V (see what the dealership stocks out of curiousity)

My floor jack is not low profile enough for the my GT. I'm guessing some ramps might be to steep for bumper, etc?..but I haven't tried it

Thanks again,

To do an automatic fluid flush, hook up a 3/8 ID clear plastic hose to the nub on the radiator that goes to the automatic transmission, put the other end of the hose in a jug with quarts marked with a permanent marker (so you can see how much has come out). Put a funnel into the ATF dipstick tube. Start the car, as fluid goes into the jug, be adding fresh fluid into the dipstick tube. Keep going until the fluid leaving the radiator looks new.

I did this on a Volvo I used to have as well as a Toyota Camry, takes just a few minutes once you get everything set up. Just take the old fluid to your local oil change place, they should take it at no charge.

If you want to read more about this method, here are the instructions on how to do it on the Volvo (its a common procedure with Volvos): http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/TransmissionAuto.htm#7XX940FluidFlush

My Mazda5 and my 99 Accord both have manual transmission so I wont be doing any more ATF swaps for a while. Though I did change the manual transmission fluid in my Accord last summer, a little easier once you figure out where the drain and fill plugs are located.

fluid type/brand

For oem atf replacement/or drain fill, are some owners using Mazda-MV atf (which is Mazda M5)?

For a drain/fill, Im leaning towards the Mazda atf. If I was try and pump out most of the old stuff, Id consider synthetic. Mobil 1 and Amsoil I can get; Tougher to get Redline.

I also see where people are using Mercon V in the Mazda 3/5 auto transmissions. These fluids are not the same as far as I know.

Curious what everyone is using? On the drain/fill, whos mixing synthetic with the oem fluid?

Thanks

I have cut two 6 inch long pieces of 2x4 and place them at the front of my ramps. The front tires drive up on the blocks before they touch the ramps, making clearance no problem.

Thanks KBrian, I'll try some 2x6's that I have and see how it goes. Will just it first to see how it goes and check where the everything is while I'm at it. After that I'll commit to buying some fluid for it.
