I know it doesnt apply to our car but I also subscribe to some more car mags, my favorite is european car. Lots of big time horsepower and high speed tuners. Tons of turbos. I read the article. Our little wagon did ok! The best part for me is that our cars are much cheaper to get alot more horsepower and handling out of compared a volkswagon with Neuspeed parts! Glad to see so many of you like to read!

Just wondered what driving that far Northwest is like. I am in the Finger Lakes region of New York and we have a good bit of roads that wind around and up and down hills and valleys around the little lakes Not much wide open area but nice scenery.

Alberta has some decent roads but they don't compare to the roads in BC (one province west of Alberta). About 98% of the roads in AB are flat and straight... it's the prairies! Not only are some of the roads in BC challenging, one also has to look out fro wildlife. Bears, moose, deer, cows, etc are free to roam over most parts.

The automobile article was very good read. They do even put a little issue on the engine, stateing that even though it has alot of "new age" technology in the engine like the direct injection and fly by wire throttle and what not, but talk about how in turbo engines it's high amount of lag, and small window of operation (between 3k and 5.5k as they say) make it a lesser of the turbo engines....

but then again.. not every company can make the inline twin turbo 6 from bmw... that engine has won soo many awards.

Staying between 3000- 5500 is cake in this car. Yes you have to shift more often and having power all the way up to redline would certainly improve things but the operating range isn't all that bad. You just have to stay more focused on your shift points and shift fast.

Didn't the 2.3 DISI turbo motor make it in Ward's 10 best engines for like the 3rd time already?

idk. The Disi 2.3 is a good engine. Dont get me wrong. I have no prolem w/ the narrow power curve, Especially w/ all the torque exploding at 3000rpm

technically our engine pulls pretty damned hard from 2700 rpm all the way up to 6000 rpm. Not an artificially restricted 3000-5500 as some have led you to believe. Seat of the pants and dyno don't lie. Thats a 3300 rpm range. Smaller window of opportunity than others, but not horribly narrow banded as some have said.

Interesting that someone mentioned the BMW turbo engine.

E90post(335) and 1addicts(135) members are going nuts over a new software upgrade bmw is flashing when they go in for service.

Those guys are now complaining about turbo lag below 3,000 while BMW has been advertising "no turbo lag". So much for the normally aspirated feel of that engine. Hhmmmm...

Look at the bright side, even though we don't have the famed BMW engine... Atleast it doesn't cost us an arm and a leg to do anything dealerwise with our cars like BMW's. haha. and we can change our own oil w/out special computer reset components.

Yes Wildlife in the early morning is ridiculous out here I spend all my attention on the road edges waiting for deer and rabbits chipmunks and some birds that are playing chicken with me. Lets see who flinches first. Good thing our brakes are up to task. Also one of the great aspects of our motor is mod happy for the most part. Open up the flow and more power, and the ability to run up the the tach is not far away with parts and some tuneing maybe. Mine, when stock had nothing above 6100. Now in all gears i hit the redline with a good bit of power left. How much does it cost to put performance parts on the BMW 135 or even the Volkwagon vr6 as in the nifty r32? Just one of the advantages to our humble 2.3 mzr. Also my mpg is avg 29.7 really. ok now, Winding Road is an online Car magazine and this month has a speed 3 cover picture for one of it's articles! Better yet look at the car's sponsor decals!!

I live in Alberta as well, the roads here are mostly sraight. However if you drive to B.C. you will find some of the best roads in the world. I had some fun there this summer in my Speed. This link is to a must have book if you ever drive through B.C.. It has all the best roads listed and rated, according to twistsiness, pavement, engineering, remoteness, scenery and character.
I personally was most interested in the twisteness ratings. (drive2)

I love CAR magazine also. It IS wicked expensive though. So I also read it in the store. CAR & EVO are 2 brit mags that are just quality. Much better than the state-side mags. Out of all of the American mags, Automobile is the closest to their quality and witty writing. Ezra Dyer cracks me up!

I get Car and Liar cuz it's cheap (they print it on what appears to be toilet paper)

I get Honda Trend because they have good comparos and decent writing..

I'm confused now. Was it EVO or car that had the grand challenge where they bought cars for 1000 pounds each and matched them in competition. I belive the cars were:

A pug 306, a Toyota Soarer, a nissan 240SX and a BMW 325i. I can't find it anywhere online but it was like a 5 part story spread over 5 issues and it has to be the BEST most FUN automotive journalism I've ever read. I bought every single issue.

I'd wish CAR would lower their subscription price; they are a cool mag. The only place I can read it is in the bookstore. That also explains why I always visit 'the throne' in a bookstore
