this is getting REALLY annoying. I know a lot of s*** about my computer, etc.

Problem: random freezing. The computer will just stop, the screen will not change (no blue screen, etc) it will just show whatever screen i was using, but nothing changes. It locks up. Alt-Cnt-Del doesn't even work. I've uninstalled a LOT of stuff. Crashes happen at TOTALLY random times. Its really annoying.

Another thing, before windows shuts down, theres a "critical" beep sound, but it never shows the dialog box since the screen changes too fast....

ANY ideas?

i've uninstalled a LOT of stuff i thought suspect. and i also know every app/process that runs, and NOTHING sticks out.

Easiest solution is to back up your data, and start with a fresh install of Windows. I do this every couple of months. A fresh install of XP runs amazingly fast, and I like it that way.

I also just ran chkdsk: heres what it said:

CHKDSK is veryifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 3)...
Security descriptor verification completed.
CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the
master file table (MFT) bitmap.
Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.
Windows found problems with the file system.
Run CHKDSK with the /f (fix) option to correct these.

Do this quick test. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click on "task manager". Goto the Performance tab and look at the CPU usage. Is it running high (near 100%) all the time?

If it's not, then you might want to open up your computer and check the CPU fan and heatsink. Could be that there's so much dust that it's reducing the cooling capabilty and causing your CPU to overheat.

Lastly, random freezes could be a sign that your power supply is going bad.

BTW, what kind of computer u have? AMD? Intel? DIY system or a Dell/compaq/HP etc?

uhm, my cpu usage at this moment, with nothing active, is 1% active

This IS on a laptop mind you, so maybe it's not supposed to be 100% all the time.
the computer is a fujitsu, its an intel 1.6ghz CPU.

im about to run the memory test.

when i posted that post, i watched the CPU usage go to 88%.

As long it's not running unusually high for very minor tasks, that's fine. Was worried that some worm/virus/program is running in the background.

U checked for virus/worm? Spyware?

i was going to suggest overheating. sounds like what happened when i had a computer overheating.

no spyware or viruses.

kpa, i did that test, it was weird- on bootup it showed a small list of like:
DX BX, @X, LX, etc
all the groups had the same numbers....

overheating eh...maybe I'll open my piece up later and clean er out then..maybe thats one of my problems...ONE of my problems..lol
