Evidently the definition portion of the SAT was optional that year. It's most likely a typo, but still damn funny.

I don't think it's a typo. I see this mistake all the time. I've seen it in individual posts and I've seen it on vendor websites. Most likely, it was picked up somewhere else from a "reputable" sauce and adopted without verification.

Dampener, dampened, dampening seems easier to say than damper, damped and damping.
