Approaching 2,000 miles, and the peer pressure

is intense!! I work with a bunch of guys that are car nuts like myself. However, the majority of them are 1/4 mile minded (and NASCAR). Don't get me started on that! HA!

Anyway; I have been winding my MAZDASPEED out more, and more. Last night; I pulled out of the Exxon onto Highway 64 off of State Road 196, coming home from work. I let it rip to about 6,300 rpm in first, and about the same in 2nd, and 3rd. I was past the 65 mph speed limit very quickly.

This car is fantastic! Now granted; I did come from 140 hp with my Nissan SE Limited. I just love the way this car drives - every aspect of it.

Of course; the guys at work are asking when I am I going to do this? When am I going to do that? "Greg; I'm sure you can get her down in the lower 14s with a little work" etc...etc...

I doubt seriously, I will ever go to the dragstrip. That is not important to me. If another similar car pulls up next to me at a light, I will think very long and hard about a race like that. Good way to get a quick ticket.....

I met the guy who bought the 1st MSP in Memphis (Orange). I bought the 2nd. He has already added a boost controller and BOV. But; I haven't had the chance to really discuss the performance differences yet. He does mods to other cars as well. He apparently has a (turbo) Integra that runs in the low 13s.

Mods like boost controller, and BOV, I might consider down the road, and whatever items MAZDASPEED introduces, I might consider, as well.

Cheers!!

Hey, When you let it rip, did you chirp the tires from 1st- 2nd gear with the 17's on? Do you know if our cars has enough power to chirp them? I just love the sound of the 'chirp' in b/t shifts.

When you met that dude in Memphis with the boost controller and BOV did you ge t chance to sit in his car to feel what it is like? How much boost is he running?

I was going easy between the gears, but I imagine it will chirp the tires. I'm sure of it. Travis; the guy with the Orange MSP was in his Integra when I met him, so I haven't had a ride in his MSP yet. But; when I do, I will post it, and give my opinion. It sounds like a good 'mod' starting point, for sure.

Cheers!

Haven't been able to chirp the tires at all from 1 to 2. Even when red-lining 1st and quick shifting. The car just doesn't want to lose traction, and the turbo isn't completely ready to make power at that point. Once the engine is breathing a bit healthier the story may be different.

AutoXer: b/t = between

AGR#7: right on! (drinks)

turboge: It's either the tires are too sticky or the weight of the over all wheels is too heavy! Because we know for a fact that this car has enough poweor to do such a thing. Even my last car could do it with only 105hp.
Anyway, one more thing to add, when you tried to 'chrip' the tires, did you get it all the way to full power and then dumped the clutch when you shifting into 2nd?

Nope, I wasn't beating on the car just a normal 1-2 shift like I do in my Spec V or other protege. Both cars chirp the tires because of the ratios and the power at those rpms. I'm sure if I power shifted I could chirp them but its pointless.

Its almost the same in all proteges with a stock clutch, the gearing does it, and i'm sure the tires/wheels might have a factor as well.

Either way, if you're chirping you're losing time.

I am having serious traction problems.. my msp gets alot of wheel hope when launching in first gear.. i have tried different rpms and am getting my best launch at 1700-2000 rpms...and by the way my car spins like crazy from first to second when racing..doesnt really chirp just spins

Check your tire pressures, I was running them at 37 front 38 rear. IF you have have 50 front you will spin... Also check your boost level, you may be running more than 7psi.

Hey, you really think chirping is losing time? Personally, when i do it, i believe i'm gaining.... This is how i look at it.. When you chirp from 1st-2nd the wheels spin for a split second or so, because of the power you put to the wheels. Have you ever noticed when you chirp. on the speedometer the speed jumps about 15km/h or so. Once in 2nd gear, the speedometer reading DOES NOT drop back the 15km/h but rather maintains it because of increased speed and less friction where the wheels have actually gained that extra 15km/h from chirpping . This is where i believe is crucial in a drag race is the shift b/t 1st - 2nd gear. If the tires don't spin again going into 2nd, you won't gain that extra 10 or 15km/h in order to 'hop' to the finish line faster. If one misses/ or screws up this shift, it's likely over.

Just picturing it, is an example of how i see it. If two Stock MSP ran a 1/4 mile together where both cars gets perfect launches, but once they shift from 1st-2nd at the same time, where one chirps and one doesn't, do you believe that the one that DID NOT chirp would win?

Getting soo techical..

Correct me if i'm all wrong.... :)

if i'm not mistaken if your looking to keep the turbo spooling you don't want that sudden cut off of power like when you take your foot off the gas to shift. instead just let the rmp's drop a little then shift and watch them climb right back up again. this way your not loosing the preasure you built up through the BOV and your right back into the power again.

then again i may be an idiot and not know what i'm talking about

Always good to have humor in the morning..... lol

Chirping your tires will not make you go faster. Your tires are losing traction at that time, it can also lead to wheel hop which will also make you lose time. At all times you want your tires to be planted on the ground within your peak torque ranges, once they break loose you will ALWAYS lose time even though you are still accelerating.

37 and 38???
32 and 29 are the factory settings.
Increasing the front tire pressure will increase your wheel hop on hard launches.
Increasing the rear tire pressure can make the car loose in hard cornering.
Both will decrease the life of your tires!

These are the tire pressures I ran on the Auto-X course.

32 and 29 is a very soft setting and seems underinflated. I wouldn't even recommend driving around the streets with those pressures.

The maximum tire pressure is 51psi. The fronts needed to be around 42 on the Auto-x, I would run them at 36 for any type of drag racing. The rears were good at 38, maybe 40 for a slight bit more rotation, but it rotated just fine at 38.

You should do some actual racing on these tires to find your sweet spots.

Can't do much autocrossing up here in Canada in the winter time...
My MSP hasn't arrived yet, but I'm looking foward to running it through the cones to see what it does compared to what my CRX used to do...

I would concentrate more on launching technique than dropping your tire pressures.. You should be slipping the clutch A LOT until you get a good roll going off the launch. I hold at 3600rpm and slip and gas appropriately until I'm off the line. If you dump the clutch too fast you will get wheel hop and wheelspin.
