Anyone else hearing a groan

So Im getting this groan that sounds a lot like the brakes when rusty.. its metalic groan but not grinding noise... it does it rarely when turning after a hard turn, when releasing clutch, or just making a very tight turn (very rarely)

I could take it to the dealer but given how rarely it does it Im afraid all they would do is put a few miles of joy ride without finding anything... braking and driveability are fine so far so Im "thinking" the differential is just plain noisy

Anyone else experiencing this? anyone had actually something wrong with it
(I know its hard to know given my noise explanation but cant think of a better way to describe it - sounds like smooth metal plates rubbing against each other)

I had experienced a similar problem when I was making a very tight turn (steering wheeled locked) while parking, so I voiced the issue when the car was in the shop for the CEL about a month ago. The service consultant said that it was probably the power steering pump and suggested not turning with the steering wheel locked in position because that doesn't turn the wheel any further and puts strain on the pump. I haven't noticed the noise anymore after getting the car back from the shop, but then I haven't really paid much attention, either. I'll see if I can replicate it.

In the manual I think it states damage can occur if you hold the wheel in the locked position for more than 5 sec.

I haven't heard anything yet.

Usually when the rotors get wet and or theres high humidity you'll get a quick flash of corrosion on the rotors which will intensify with time. When you first start driving after this condition exists I get a groan and or grinding sound until the first couple hard applications of the brakes and then it clears itself. My friend has a Lambo Gallardo that is notorious for this since the rotors are so big and perhaps the type of alloy of the rotors that he actually get a reddish coating on the wheels that he has to initially clean off after a run. Could this be possibly what may be happening to you? Are you driving in wet conditions? Then the car sits for a time?

I have one coming from the passenger seat. I usually hear it right after I say....Hold on!

Funny I thought I was the only one that had this problem. It is good to know that other people are having the same issue Swamppy. Good luck with it, if you have any tips please let me know. I have been searching for a fix for quit some time now.

I have the same problem...I thought it was the cold, but it even does it when the car is warm. I took it to mazda, but of course they didnt hear it.

Mine happens when turning into a hard right turn.

I generally stuff chocolate in the hole top hole that vents hot air, it works as a temporary cure for a while but then the groan comes back.

doesn't work with mine. She's about 325lbs as is. Chocolate just gets her in the mood for cookie dough and chicken fried bacon.

So if you find the root cause first please ping me and if I find it Ill let you know....

Its Southern California so humidity isnt a factor and no its not the steering pump being stressed at steering stops.. I thought it would be the brakes but it doesnt seem to do it after it hasnt been driven but rather randomly... MOST of the time its on a slight turn but a few times now its done it while releasing clutch on 1st gear.....

Its about due for oil - Ill have em inspect the front left rotor....

As for the passenger compartment groans I only heard it once and then got a backhand to the head to remind me I got precious cargo in the rear so havent had any groans from passenger after that (well maybe other types of groans.....(thumb) )

Will do!!

Mine is only when steering, I don't think mine does it when releasing the clutch or anything like that.-Only happened once, I slammed on the brakes...i felt the ABS and could hear it as well...then that "noise" for about 1-2 seconds. Really strange...and of course when I told the dealer, he thought i was stupid and just hearing the ABS.

However, I'll keep you up to date.

Mine does the same. It seems to haapen only at very low speed, with the wheels turned and while braking. I'm certain I'm not at full lock when this happens. I had mine at the dealer yesterday for the CEL, and mentioned the brake issue; they said it was normal brake noise (I also question this). They also refused to do anything about the all-weather mats because my VIN was not listed in the campaign, so I'll need to call Mazda about it...

Well mine is getting worse... the more it happens the more I think my differential is having issues... its due for oil change soon and I just got the recall notice for the floor matts so hopefully by the time I take it in the groan will happen often enough for them to hear it.....

I think I ruled the clutch out - it happens through right hand 20-30mph turns with clutch fully engaged... its either left brake or differential - its def. coming from front drivers side.......

Im not sure I am following. I have hit it pretty good on this car including hte "hold on" times but I don't here anything...???

I only get this noice when engaging first gear at low speeds and low rpms and it only last for like 1 sec but it is loud. Only one other time when braking hard it made that same sound but it lasted longer and louderthat one instance, the clutch was not depressed at all when it did that. So I am at a loss as to what is causing the noise.

you guys remember we have a limited slip differential, right?

This thing could be making noise as the differential between a left tire and a right tire's rotation is causing the diff. to respond.

It shouldn't make such noticeable noise though. Plus tire differential happens all the time...and mine only does it on sharp right turn.
However, I have not heard the noise for some weeks now.

We'll see.

obaa996, let us know if you ever find out whats causing that 'noise'
