Any photographers in here?

I need some help! I'm headed to Maui in October to shoot a wedding. I'd like to see if anyone who's been to Maui can give me suggestions on shoot locations. I would also like to know the sunrise/sunset times around that time of season. Any park passes or permits that I would need etc. This will be for their engagement session and the day after the wedding (Trash the dress) so that it's just the couple and us photographers.

thanks!

I was actually born on Maui so I can definitely help you out there. Where are you going to be staying? I used to live on the south side of the island in a town called Kihei. There are some beautiful beaches there, particularly Kamaole Beach II and III offer some great backdrops with the West Maui Mountains in the background. My parents were married on Kam III, in fact!

Also on that side of the island, just south of Wailea is what we liked to call "secret" beach. Its a very small beach situated in-between two houses that a lot of locals like to go to for privacy and the occasional wedding or two. Located here: 20.626893,-156.443116 right off of Makena road, and just beyond what they call "Big Beach."

Lahaina is on the far west side, at the base of the West Maui Mountains, and is the most "touristy" place on the island. I'm personally not a huge fan, but it has its own little things to offer. Hana, which is on the other (north east) side is also extremely beautiful, has some black-sand beaches in the area as well and you have to get there by road only - so pick a nice car if you're gonna drive because its a hell of a road! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hana_Highway

Honestly, I want to go back so badly - the place is so incredibly beautiful, peaceful, and plain fantastic. You're gonna have a great time! None of the state parks we went to 5 years ago required passes or anything like that, but if any of the places I mentioned pique your interest, probably not a bad idea to get in touch with someone at the local tourism board and ask. October is a great time of year to go (though a little early for Humpback whale season). Sunrise should be around 6:20am and sunset around 6pm on the dot.

Hope that helps and let me know if you have any more questions!

it's a really good candid shot. It's got a distracting background, but for the kind of shot it is, I don't think the background hurts it. The processing is nice, focus is perfect, and the exposure is pretty good. Maybe 1/3-1/2 underexposed, but that is probably just my personal preference. Nice work!

This is great info! I'm going to be staying here: http://www.mauisunset.com/ and the wedding ceremony will be at the Olowalu Plantation House.

I'm looking for epic couples photos for them. Waves, rocky outcrops where she can lay on, secluded beaches, secluded forests. I also want to try some compositing of pictures as well. The sunrise at Haleakala would be awesome as well and the couple has expressed interest in that. The couple has suggested a couple of spots:

Seven Sacred Pools
Needle Point
Iao State Park
ulupalakua ranch

Wanted to get your opinions on these locations. We pretty much have all day with them and we're all bringing hiking shoes just in case we gotta hike. She's bringing them and wearing her wedding gown with it LOL.

Haha, that's gonna be a heck of an adventure dude! Maui Sunset is literally down the street from where my parents and I used to live when I was a baby! The Kamaole beaches are right across the street, in fact! For rocky outcrop pictures, that "secret" beach I mentioned to you is fantastic. Its secluded, has an awesome view of Molikini and Kaloolawe, here's my favorite shot of that place - its probably my favorite spot in the entire world:

Getting sunrise photos is going to be difficult for you since few roads are even on the eastern side of the island. Really, the only thing over there is Hana and its not an easy trip by any means. Sunset is where your best (if not only) low sun-angle shots are going to be.

To let you know, Needle Point is located in the Iao Valley (state park), so you can kill two birds with one stone there. The only downside is the Iao area is actually considered a rainforest as its on the leeward side of the West Maui Mountains and is usually cloudy - might not be the best place for wedding photos, but you'd know better than I. This will definitely give you your secluded forest photos! Here's a picture from the Iao valley:

The Seven Sacred Pools are on the south/southeast side of Haleakala. They're supposed to be breathtaking and amazing to swim in, but again, being on the leeward side of the mountain, clouds might be an issue. I've never seen them from the ground, but here's an aerial shot I took of them:

Ulupalakua Ranch is on Haleakala itself and probably would have some of the best backgrounds and wide-angle views of the places you mentioned. Not sure if you checked out their website yet, but it looks pretty cool (I've never been personally). My parents went back for their 25th anniversary not too long ago and went to a place called the Kula lodge which also had the Kula Botanical Gardens there too, which I'm sure would give some great shooting opportunities.

Look, if you want an assistant there with you, I'd be happy to lend my services free of charge so long as my airfare and room/board were paid for. (whistle)

Ha! I wish I had posted this earlier but I already have an assistant coming with me. You would've been a WAAAY better option but I had to bring in someone who had a portfolio as well as per the couple's request. They're paying for my 5 day stay/car rental and the other 2 days is coming out of my own pocket. Next time I get another destination wedding there..I'm definitely going to hit you up and work a 3rd person into my pricing hehe. So it'd be you, assitant and me. LOL
