Any photographers in here?

for those of you who get paid to take pictures. how much do you charge for a 3hr event? doing a building grand opening/ ribbon cutting at work and they assumed i'd take pictures for free.

Have you ever charged anyone for photography before?

If it's for charity/fundraising it's usually 50% off the regular rate. Just running a business costs a lot. Insurance, equipment costs, license, etc. so I'd have to charge a lot more than someone who's just getting paid to do it as a hobby. I'd probably give your employer a break and give them a discount. I do that too with my current 9-5. I've been hired by the company to do a couple of our corporate events this year, so I gave them a small discount. Free drinks, free food, budget for assistants and whatever I need to make my life easier. Can't complain. Oh ya...photography is a part time job for me as well, so full time peeps charge a little bit more than I do.

If you want more info, PM me.

Love the panning shots btw! Damn..I wish there were worthwhile races in my city.

I got to shoot a work event a few weeks ago. It's a "battle of the bands" thing and all the performers are current employees. Some even learned to play new instruments that they've never touched before, and some were ex-performers or had their own bands outside of work.

Thanks man! I was using a 5d mark2 camera and switching between a 24-70 2.8L and a 135mm F2.0L lenses. Shooting around ISO3200, no speedlight. I never shoot speedlight when I shoot concerts/shows. Or at least it's very rare for me.

I figured no speed light, but had to double check. Thanks for the info! My mechanic and his wife are big on going to concerts and want me to come take photos for them of a local band that they somewhat sponsor. I'm trying to figure out settings for concert shooting heh. Time to put my 35mm lens to use. Thanks Funky!

nice pics indeed funky. i always wanted a 5d mk2. do you always shoot in raw?

Usually, yes. I'll shoot in jpeg if I'm doing a photobooth, or if it's just for fun. If it's for a client, I'll always shoot in raw.

I got to shoot my good friends Born From Ruins this weekend during their first headlining act at the House of Blues.

Photo dump, engage:

^Man! High speed, plenty of light, no grain in your photos. Bands are hard but you killed it. I need wider lenses so I can get more light for shows

Thank you sir!

I need to get a 35mm, or nifty fifty prime lens so I can get in a little bit closer. My 85mm might be a bit much for a small venue, but I was still very impressed with it; this was the first time I used it for a show.

I'm impressed as well. Those photos are fantastic! Particularly for what I would imagine were tricky lighting conditions.
