Helpful Hint: When resizing for the forums I find 800 pixels width is just right for landscape images, and 500 pixels wide for portrait images.

Beautiful shots Ed. My images are too big?

Too big, of course, is a relative (and subjective) quality. My monitor displays 1280x1024. In a browser window with my bookmarks displayed in the sidebar, I have to scroll to see your entire image. If I had a 1680x1050 monitor I'd likely not have that problem. Also, my recommendation is predicated on the idea that maybe 50% of the site viewers have such a large screen, and 50% are viewing on smaller screens (like mine). Since you want as many people as possible to be able to see your work in its full glory I'd recommend 800 pixel image width.

This leads me to another point. As a photographer you should want to control the way the image is viewed as much as you control the elements within the borders of the image. I'm sure you don't intend for people to see part of the image, scroll to the right, then see the rest of the image. The intent is for some one to see the whole image thus getting an appreciation for your composition, choice of exposure and color, and other photographic elements you carefully combined to create you finished image. More to the point, seeing an image slightly larger, while nice if I can see it without scrolling, really doesn't have an equal upside as the downside of having to scroll. Also, I find that a smaller image can still powerfully convey color, light, composition, etc. That's why I don't mind my images being seen in only 800 pixels; the impact of the image generally conveys just fine.

I appreciate the response Ed. I did not think about the fact that a lot of people use sidebars, lower resolutions, etc. I will step down a size in the future.

We have begun the photo contests again here, so it would be great to get more people in it.
The current theme is orange: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123724921

Man, living in Arizona my whole life, I don't get to experience the "changing of the seasons." It goes from Summer to Winter. Foliage does not change color, it simply either dies or stays green-ish. The only orange I could get around here is a construction cone.
