Any photographers in here?

Jenn told me in a PM that she was just using a point n shoot...

I might spend some of my evening tomorrow uploading pics from Hoover Dam. I've got a helicopter trip scheduled with my dad that's gonna fly us over the Grand Canyon, over Hoover Dam, and down the Strip, so that should make for some interesting shots. I'm also going to spend Saturday and Sunday night just wlkaing the strip, and going to some of the free shows, like the Bellagio fountains.

I actually really, really do not like calling my camera a point and shoot. I DO NOT use it in that way.

It's a Canon S5 IS that I use on full manual settings all the time. I think I may have used the auto setting once or twice in the year that I've had it.

I bought it instead of a true SLR because I carry it everywhere. I can't carry an SLR and lenses when I'm walking around all day or at the track for 8 hours. I guess some people can but I get really tired of it.

I feel like people look down on me because I don't use $2000 in equipment but I put just as much effort into my photos as everyone else.:(

Ehh..like a ton of photos that people take w/ SLR's can be taken with P&S cameras anyways. It's the amount of control you have over the pictures that is a big selling point.

+1

Basically, you hit the nail on how I use my FZ7 and the reasons why I got it.

In any event, it's nice to see another person doing motorsports coverage.

Ditto. Though sometimes I was I could use a different lens. I love my "point & shoot".

I probably will buy a full SLR soon though so I'll be looking for a lot of advice. But, my S5 IS will still go everywhere with me because it can. I'm not about to lug a backpack around all day every time I go out.

I learned to shoot on my Aunt's Nikon film SLR's when I was just a child. She was a professional photographer. Now she just takes ridiculously amazing pics and gets paid to be a nurse instead of for photos. A lot better pay and easier.

The main thing I really want to master right now is night shots. Any tips? I get a lot of noise in my pics at the higher ISO's. I use a tripod, aperature is open all the way. Do I really just need to use even longer shutter speeds?

That's all it is. Tripod, super low iso, and longer exposure. You can fool around with your aperture and see what results it gets you.

some pics from the 24hr lemans race in France last weekend

I was shooting through a fence so you can see some of that in the pics
