I see them all the time running autocross at FedEx field as part of DC SCCA competitions. Those guys are serious...they don't care a lick about cone marks or anything. A few guys run GPS-based data acquisition straight to a laptop.

I actually dont read Strobist on any regular basis, but it has good information.

Thanks for the welcome. When I do some shots worth posting, I'll put them up...I just didnt think pics of old ghost towns or naked 50 year old cancer survivors would really fit in a car forum ;)

There's actually a whole lot more of my "artistic" work on my deviantart gallery ... again, there are nudes there, but they're blocked if you're not a registered user.

Speaking of banned...I'm not currently, nor have I even been a member of deviantART. None the less, I am banned from registering. The Help page says I have little recourse short of waiting for the ban to expire. I mean, it says I could register from a different IP subnet, but for me that would be work and well, you know...work+NSFW equals fired!

Well, looking through more of this thread, I see the shots are not all car-related and such, so I'll put up my most recent ghost town shots, these are from Vulture Mine, near Wickenburg Arizona.

Here's the main gallery. (meaning there's more shots to see at this link)

wow great pics! that has to be very interesting walking around all those abandoned places taking photos...i would love to do something like that. how do you find your locations? just word or mouth? I imagine photography like that take some travel time.

Here are 2 photos i took at a concert lastnight...as you can imagine the lighting was well, less than perfect. It was a good learning experience none the less.

You lucky dog!! I'd slaughter an ant farm to drive one of those. No, to just sit in one. I haven't learned to drive stick yet. :P But I've been obsessed with them for almost 4 years now, still haven't had a chance to do a shoot with one, but IMo they're fantastic and, compared to other sports cars, pretty affordable. :D

Hey man, it was driving nirvana. I loved it so much that my next car is going to be one! I'm currently looking for a 2005 Aspen White Elise with any interior. The 2005s are actually coming down in price and you can find them now for under $30k with a great warranty. I'm waiting for the prices to hit around $25k with 20-40k miles on them and then I'm gonna buy. I'll keep the Mazda for a beater car, but the Elise will become the daily driver; its really not as bad as people think.

And don't sweat man... you'll get to drive one sooner or later! (thumb)

Thanks! Yeah, it's really relaxing and sorta creepy at the same time hanging out in these ghost towns.

Sometimes they have a minimal population still living there, other times like with the shots of Vulture above, there are only a couple caretakers to keep the idiots out.

Most of the Arizona ghost towns are common knowledge to those of us who have lived here most of our lives. There are several travel guides about them too.

There are about 6 ghost towns within an hour's distance from my home, and at least 45 that I know of within 4 hours or less travel time.

I like the 1st and 2nd pic of your posted images.

And I like the pillow fight picture on your website gallery.

That's very cool. I have a few pics of my journeys through the wilderness, but this was back in 2000 when I had a killer 3.3MP Minolta. I also had no photo skills at all. The second barn house was right behind my own about 75 yards aways. When we moved in it was spring/summer, but when the foliage fell that's when I noticed it. Very creepy place. Wish I took pics of the inside.

Wow, that abandoned barn house is CREEPY. But seriously VERY cool. My boyfriend and I broke into Fairfield Hills (an abandoned Insane Asylum) a few years ago... the pictures I have are not all that great... I wasn't very good with my Rebel yet in dark places.

I would LOVE to go back one of these days.

its never the programme. its always the person. 5 years in architecture has taught me that.
That's VERY true - it's the same for people buying more MP, upgrading bodies, better lenses because they think better gear = better shots. I'm no guru with Photoshop by any means (or ANY program) but I've been dying to see what LR has to offer for some time now. :D Mm.. an architecture course would do me some good as well. I've always been envious of people who have followed that field.

There are the complaints of "not comfortable", but with handling like that, comfort is an option not a necessity! The Elise you described would be amazing, mm. I'm surprised the price has gone down so much, but hey, that's good for me I guess way in the future. :D I've been excited about the release of the Exige since I heard rumor of it in 04 or so, actually saw one on the road a while back around town, it was gorgeous. I'd love a Lazer Blue or storm titanium with black interior. I don't even know what I'd do with a Lotus, I've never been to a track or anything--but damn it would be fun.

you might have heard about the nikon D40. its a great camera for the price, but almost every camera nowadays has an option to change the exposure

so what kinda of camera would i have to buy to get those? i heard the nixon D something, 450? cant remember the number, but i heard it was good
Almost any kind of SLR will have the ability to use a cable release and a bulb mode (bulb just means the shutter stays open for as long as you push the button down on the cable release).

An SLR is the kind of camera you can remove and switch lenses on. If you're sticking with digital: The Nikon D40, D50, D70 etc; The Canon Rebel, Rebel XTi, 20D, 30D, 40D, 5D, etc. There's also digital SLRs made by Minolta, Pentax, Fuji, Olympus, and a few others I cant remember right now. I would recommend going into a camera store like a Ritz/Wolf and talking to the sales people there about what you're looking to do. Do NOT go into an electronics store (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc) and expect the guy working the camera section to know cameras as well as someone at an actual camera store.

You're generally going to end up paying around $800 for an entry level DSLR body and lens kit, plus another $60-$150 for the cable release, and spend at least $100 on the tripod. I highly recommend a backpack style camera bag ($80-$200) if you're going to be doing street shots around town.

Don't expect these guys to know what you're talking about. Most of the stores I have been in have no idea what's going on. If you want good info then search the internet. Just cuz someone works at a specialty store it doesn't mean that's their specialty. See if you can find privately owned shops. Might be a little more expensive but that's the price you pay for expertise. You can also try eBay. You can get used cameras for good prices.

The only reason I mentioned Ritz/Wolf is because I used to work for them, and several of my pro buddies worked for them as well...it's a good place to get a part time job so you can pull some product discounts and get in with the manufacturer reps. A privately owned camera store is the best bet for someone knowledgeable, but you really want to get your hands on the cameras you want to buy before you spend your cash...and this is where the internet doesnt help. Even if you end up buying online, go to a store and handle the camera models you're interested in first.
