Idk what to do guys!

I was carelessly backing out and my garage door hit the car, luckily no damage except my antenna came off!

The radio and everything still works, so idk!

I think it looks MUCH better without that footlong thing coming out of it anyway, but what do I do?

OK!!

So I went out on a drive, AND, one of the stations comes up as poor reception, with many others working perfectly fine! I am a bit bummed because it was my favorite station!!

I took it to the Mazda Repair, and this is what I got:

The Antenna snapped out, so the screw is still stuck in the head (Black thing the antenna goes into), and it will cost 127 in parts and 150 in labor to completely fix, so 300 dollars!

I told him my radio still works, and he said it is only a matter of time before it fries, but my CD would still work!

I do not have 300 dollars to pay for this!

Please help guys!

If it snapped AT the screw, you will either need to replace the WHOLE assembly OR try to extract it with an ez-out.

Yes sir!

It snapped AT the screw!!

They are charging me 300 to replace the whole assembly, but the thing is, everything is still working so I do not see a need!

it should come out very easily with a left handed drill bit. You can probably go to autozone and pick one up and fix it yourself for $10. I have an antenna that I can give you for the cost of shipping.

So if I can get that screw out, the base does not need replacing? That's what the Mazda dealership is telling me!

That is probably correct. If all the stations are coming in, you probably just need to get an antenna in there.

you can probably get like an 1/8" left hand drill bit from sears or autozone. Put it in a drill and put the drill in reverse and go to town. It should come out very easy!

I am not good at this stuff at ALL!

I do not want to further damage anything!

Could I pay someone to get this done?

x2 on the left hand drill bit or even a tiny philips head screwdriver you can almost always get them to turn. i work at honda and they break all the time and we always extract the stud for free. your dealer is raping you on that for sure.

Haha I do, but he tried to RIP me off on a new battery charging me 175 when I got one for 100, with them even coming for 75! So I said **** off and left him!

I am just not good with these things, and do NOT want to mess with it!

Yea, he said I need to replace the base too, so he's clearly ripping me off in this case!

Thank you guys so much!

Where can I get an Antenna though?

Id say drill it. Im a mechanic myself and id do it before I forked over all that money. If you mess it up, you were going to buy another one in the first place. I say left hand drill bit.

I said id give you my stock antenna if you paid shipping.

Whats the worst that could happen... you drill out the center, leaving the threads. Then you still need the main antenna part. Either drill it out, or get an ez-out set to extract it.

EDIT: The Cougar antenna is different if you read that post. Does not apply to Proteges.

Yeah sounds like they're hosing you. It won't fry your radio. Personally, I think you should walk back in there and give Mr. Mazda-Service-Man a good ol' fashioned healthy b****-slap, and proceed to find a friend who is comfortable doing it for you. It should only take a couple of minutes. Totally understandable if you aren't comfortable doing it, though. At the worst a back yard mechanic will probably charge you like $25 to do it.

...and slap anyone who says, 'it'll fry the radio without the antenna'.

PUhleeze. [rolls eyes]

Thanks guys!

Its working now, without anything lol!

Idk if its bad for the car without an antenna, but I think the car looks a ton better without that 2 foot thing sticking out!

Can I use it as is? The screw is stuck, so that should prevent anything from going in!
