Angel Eyes on a P5

ok so I know I have been talking about getting rid of my car and all because of the lemon law and I still plan on it but this is possible on alot of different cars and I just wanted to share with all of you. This is what I planned to do before the problems started with my car. I will post the photochopped pic I did when I get home tonight. At work now so don't have access to the pics. Anyway My thought was to open up the headlightsz and first do the black out mod and then add the angel eyes around the high and low beams. The the very inside of the high beam side was really gonna be the only tricky part but the rest would be pretty straight forward. I think it would look mean as hell at night with just the angel eyes on which would be wired to the parking lights and the fogs. Anyway enough of me rambling on to the good stuff as in HOW TO. I found this guys website and he explains it pretty well. I had planned on doing a fem changes from his design but I think you guys will get the picture of what I am talking about. I have researched the actual material to make the angel eye itself and although this guy uses a curtain rod I didn't want to use the hexagon shaped ones(don't think it would look good close up. Second option would be to buy the rings off ebay or a bmw tuner and cut them apart. I was just thinking of getting some somewhat thin plastic rods( maybe 1/2 to 3/4 the size of a curtain rod) and using a heat gun to get the shape I wanted. Ok well let your minds run wild. I'll post the pics later

HOW TO ANGEL EYES

I'm curious to see them on a protege...
Aftermarketers should make these...

One thing I thought I'd add about this mod is that the cost is very minimal. The most expensive thing are the LED's but even those are pretty cheap. The system I have planned out uses 2 LEDS for each headlight so a total of 8 LEDS. that would mean 8 resistors as well and misc clips and wiring and such. the big thing with this mod is to be handy or be good with crafts. The way I plan to do it is to have the LEDs outside of the actual headlight housing on top and then the wires just run to the parking lights in the headlight. So not much wire used. I thought about since LEDS are very efficient hooking in another wire kind of like a tap that could be hooked straight to the battery. this way you could have the angel eyes on all day at a show and you wouldn't drain your battery. Another possiblity is just using a auxillary battery at shows. Like a energizer flashlight lantern battery or something.

All in all I think that all of the parts I priced to make the kit came out to under $50 and that was using really bright LEDS like $7 for a 2 pack. I planned on using solder and nice connectors as well for a factory look(well as close as you can get) Only other thing you would need would be some silicone to secure the angel eyes and seal up the headlight so no moisture gets in.

Tools on the list include
Misc. Screwdrivers
Pliers
Soldering Iron & Solder
Dremel tool w/ cutoff discs and other grinding bits
Heat Gun (Can substitute an oven but a heat gun offers more control)
Sand Paper
Wire Strippers and crimpers
Black Spray Paint(If you want to black out the headlights you'll need more) ( I was going to paint any piece of plastic that was outside of the actual housing black instead of using electrical tape)
Drill w/ various bits

This may be overkill but I am anal and want it done right the first time. It is possible to do all of this in one day. If something happens that I end up still having my car I am definately doing this mod...ahhh heck whatever car I have I am going to try and do this mod to. Since I am thinking about a WRX. Just think about a WRX with the Morettes projectors and angel eyes and HIDs. (wow) (2thumbs) (shocked)

I can help you out with wiring the LEDs and what resistors you'll need. You don't want to overpower them or you'll burn 'em out. Underpower 'em and they won't be as bright as you want.

A couple of comments/questions:
Hexagonal rods and circular rods will look virtually identical once installed, especially since the front part will be covered with cuts.
Why didn't the person with the webpage continue the cuts all the way around?
You don't need to heat up the headlights to 350 degrees. That's really hot. 250 is probably plenty.
"The way I plan to do it is to have the LEDs outside of the actual headlight housing on top and then the wires just run to the parking lights in the headlight." What do you mean? How would the LEDs be outside the headlight housing?
If you're going to all the trouble to make these and install them, you really should just put in a switch for them. If you don't want another switch on your dash just mount it out of sight (like under your dash.) You could run 4 LEDs on your battery for a long time without running it down. Leaving your parking lights on would draw a lot more.
Post the specs of the LEDs you're using and I can tell you your wiring options.
I'll be around to offer help and critcism :).

Dude, that is friggin cool. Providing you are one of those types of people who work good with your hands. That would be and awesome mod. I don't think that those look ricey at all either. About the only thing I would change is make a switch in the dash or somewhere that you could turn the Angel Eyes on or off once your parking lights are on. I wouldn't want them on all the time. Anyhow, good find man.

Yeah I thought about getting another stock foglight switch and putting it in the blank next to the current foglight switch. I think a little change thingy is there now. That way I could just turn them on and off whenever I wanted and just wire them with a relay and then straight to the battery like another set of foglights.

When I say that the LED will be outside of the headlight housing I mean that I would have the tops of the acrylic rods exit the top of the headlight via a drilled hole and then sealed with silicone. And it is in those tips that I would mount the LEDS. That way I could change them easily. If I wanted another color or something for shows. All you would have to do is not cut stripes in the rod outside of the head light and like I said use some spray paint to paint it black. Well I tried a little photoshop of what I am going for. I think it would look much better done for real. Let me know what you think. I did one side of the car with foglight and angel eyes on and the other off for a comparison.

The above is a signature that I use on another board that shows my angel eyes on my 3-series. There are a couple of companies that make them for BMWs - you might want to check around to see if they are planning on making them for other cars.

They cost $250 for the fiber optics, rings and lightbox. There are even filters you can put into the boxes to change the color.

Installation was straight-forward and I wired them to my foglight power and negative wires.

this is my PHOTOCHOP...
hope it gives u more of an idea of what it would look like...

first of all. i went to Radio Shack and was looking around at the leds and i wasnt sure which ones to get(gunna be doing a different mod with the leds. not angel eyes). i wasnt sure as which voltage leds with a 220 ohm resistor would be proper for a 9 volt battery???

i have some what of a knowledge with wiring things, but just need some help on which (voltage) leds to get?

any help appreciated

well i know you can get teh same led's that are used for these angel eyes from www.lunaraccents.com and they are already wired intogether for your headlights and there like $19.95 a set .. but i would like to know how they will work with our headlights since ours are design nothing liek the BMWs and i knwo you can buy a full headlight conversion kit for the hondas but they are like $900.00 USD

I found it pretty funny when i read this thread because i have been working on this for about a week now. I am actually in the process retrofitting my car with Audi A6 projectors and HIDS and in the process i will be doing the angel eyes which i have already done. Its very straight forward but takes alot of time. The reason you should use the hexagon shaped rod and only cut half way or not even half is because you dont want to many cuts because then light escapes so you want as minimal of a cut on the rod. As well i tried to figure out a way to do the HIGH beams but it wont work unless you make a non circular shape on the angel eye for the high beam, and if anyone does do it by the end of the let me know so i dont rip my headlights apart for a 3rd time. As far as heating up the lights 350 degrees for 10 minutes is perfect sometimes its not even enuff and i have already painted my housing black like the 2003s so i know. The best thing i suggest is do the angel eyes use them as your DRL and at night just use your normal lows. I dont know how good it would look with a reflector beam but i would love to see someone elses take on this project. Good luck to everyone who tries it.

Funwagon - Dont put the LEDs outside the housing the light is going to travel to far if you do this and the angel wonts be as bright. You want to try to maximize the amount of light otherwise on the bottom of the eye it wont be so bright and the rest will look alot brighter and i am sure you dont want that.

p5 projector , which voltage leds are you using, and what ohm resistor that will hook up to 9 v battery ??????
