Has anyone amped the stock mids/highs? I have an extra amp laying around that I'd like to use....

I will be doing this shortly, either with the stock amp or with and MTX Thunder 302.
I will post my results.

I got an MTX 684 thunder, think it will blow them apart if i hook it up :) only one way to find out.

MOst people that have done it have swapped out the speakers shortyly after. The factory equipt kenwoods get very harsh with an amp driving them. They were realy designed to be as loud as possible with as little power as possible and although they can take a decent amount of power, its not usualy a pleasent listening experience.

I'm running them off and JL amp and they sound way better. How long they will last I have no clue but when they do die I will replace them with some JL components.

Crossovers people....
Cross them over at a minimum of 90Hz, 100-120 to be safe. If you do that then the harshness should be minimal even with tons of power.

I've got my Eclipse 8062s (6.5" components) hooked up to my MTX Thunder 302 and they can barely handle 85Hz at full volume. Some songs they break up but most of the time they are fine. I had it set at 60Hz but they were bottoming out.

Since the MTXs don't have any markings on their crossover frequencies make a test tone cd with 75-80-85-90Hz tones. Play one of them and move the knob until you hear the tone begin to fade then move it back a little. Do the same with your sub amp (but in the opposite direction). Some overlap is preferred to keep the bass up front.

Considering there size, they should last along time with only a 70 hz or higher crossover, ateast thats where I'd put them although I like as much midbass as possible but have a good ear for distortion.

Ok, i have the stock amp running the front doors, the Thunder 302 pushing the 12.
A LOT more volume, but like 1sty said, they are a bit harsh.
I dialed down the gain to about 1/2, and it's a big improvement over stock.
I ripped out the stock rear rack, and rewired the entire car with 4 guage power and ground, distribution & ground blocks, gold battery terminal etc.
Also, swapped the Fosgate Stage 1 for a Kenwood 3009 12 inch, and the bass is a lot tighter now. The Stage 1 was very boomy IMHO.
I might try adding 6X9's to the rear deck and using the stock amp to push them as well.
I'm happy for now. (nana)

Duly noted.
Components are on the agenda for next year.
I might then put the stock 6X8's in the rear since they will gathering dust.
