almost 16k miles, is sub blown?

Quicky question. A few days ago my sub started sounding weird, or maybe it's just my hearing.

The sub used to go THUMP THUMP, now it goes THUMPRRRRRRRRRRR THUMPRRRRRRRRR.

The rattling has gotten stronger and stronger. It's really distinct.

Could my sub be blown? I've already contacted Mazda and they've ordered me a new sub without even checking my car. I just want to make sure it is blown before I go to the dealership.

I've read JL8w3v2D4 or 8w3d2 were recommended? Has anyone had any problems with any aftermarket subs in their MSP? I might get the new sub replacement and then buy the JL Audio one, so I don't have to keep on replacing this POS sub.

Yep, it's blown. My audio guy reccomended the JL 8w3v0. It's a better match for the stock amp, runs 4 ohms without bridging the amp, and doubles the output. Sounds 20x better than stock brand new. Takes 20 minutes to install. (Would have been 2 min., but the mounting screws on the stock all had loc-tite on them...had to drill most of them out and use new ones.)

how much does the JL 8w3v0 cost usually?
My subs been blown for about 10000 miles now and I didn't even notice...

The stock sub is garbage. If you listen to rap above volume 20, you will most likely blow the thing. It's hard to tell by looking at it if it is blown, because it tears behind the plastic in the center of the woofer. But if you are experiencing loud, almost fart-like rattle from it then it is most likely blown. I switched to a Rockford Fosgate "Punch" 8 inch and it sounds way better than stock and has blown yet. One thing to keep in mind is that the Amp also makes a shitload of vibration noise...at least in my car. I have to tighten the four screws holding the amp to the rack every week or so, or it makes the most annoying loud rattle.

I got the JL 8w3v0 for $79.99. The 8w3v2 was 129.99.
So when the audio guy reccommended the 8w3v0, i knew he was probably telling the truth. he said the stock amp would not have enough power to drive the 8w3v2, and would most probably overheat the amp in short order. Anyway, the 8w3v0 sounds good enough for me (i like being able to hear), and highly reccomend it.(headbang)

MSPDFREAK,

So your audio guy recommends the JL 8W3v0 because it's much more powerful and will not blow at the normal settings our Stock Subs blow at? I normally put volume to 20..........25(max only if all windows are down).

I've heard people inverting their subs too? How did you install your new subs? Did you put it back just like a stock sub or did you invert it like some people did (did a search and forgot who it was, but they inverted their new sub, suposedly to prevent it from blowing so easily). Thanks for the input. Once the Dealership replaces my subs, I'm going to go ahead and get the JL 8w3v0.

No, the guy reccomended the 8w3v0 because it was a closer match to the stock amp. The 8w3v2 requires more power...enough to overheat the stock amp. As far as the inverting thing, you're thinking about the amp. People who use the 8w3v2 invert the amp, thinking the fins (heat sink) facing up will keep the amp cooler. My audio guy says that's crap though, because it doesn't produce enough power for those fins to do much good in either direction. BUT, it can overheat, mainly because the 8w3v2 draws so much more power than the v0. As far as mounting, I just unscrewed the old sub, disconnected the wiring...then reversed the process with the new sub. Really, it's that easy! No bridging...anything. You'll like it, I promise!(evil)
