Aftermarket Towing Packages

I understand that I can install an aftermarket receiver, wiring package and heavier duty transmission cooler. But, how critical is the engine conrol module? I have a 2800lb camper and we don't pull it very far, very often. We may take one trip (400 - 500 miles) a year. The rest of the "pulls" are witing 10 miles of where we store it.

I am not sure about the need to replace or modify the engine control module. Last September I had a receiver hitch, wiring, and a brake unit install on my CX-9 T so I could tow my 2800 pound MPG camper. I didn't do anything to the engine control module and it tows beautifully. There was a bulletin out for 'knocking' noise when the engine/air temperatures were cold (below 20F). The dealer reprogrammed the engine module and the knocking noise has gone away when the vehicle is driving in cold weather before the engine warms up.

Thanks. I was thinking that the ECM was to help you pull more "efficiently" but wasn't necessarily critical for the engine's survival. I'm pretty sure it revises where the shift points are based on towing. Without it, I'm thinking the engine might just get slightly less mpg at the lower gears.
