AFC idle issue

AFC: Post all your idle issues!

I had my AFC (V1) installed for a year now without any problems, but since last week, my car has been acting strange at idle. When its hot, it just wants to stall sporadically and then come back to life. I unplugged it and the car runs fine so Im guessing that its the AFC that causes that.

I am going to try uploading the map again tomorrow night with the correct settings, but I just wanted to check first if anybody else already had that kind of problem at idle after having the unit installed for a while?

thanks

EDIT:
It is now worst, the car stalls at idle and I smell gaz when the chip is plugged. All of you guys that have this kind of problem please post on this thread. DSMConvert said there was a lift time warranty on the AFC!

+1 same problem for me. without the afc the car runs fine, with afc installed idle problems, car runs very lean until it is about to stall out then resets its self and then starts going lean again.

I've had mine installed since they were first released and never had a problem until a few months ago.

I've tried loading different maps and still have the same problem.

This is acutally my 2nd AFC going bad like that. I bought a used one last year and I was having the same problem: bad idle and the car wanting to stall. I finally gave up last year and bought a new one thinking it might have been just a bad one, but this is now the second one so something is definetly not right with those AFC so please post all of your problems if you had any!

Thanks

mine used to do that but after a day of driving on it its fixed itself i dont think it was with the afc at least my problem

If you smell gas, your running way to rich and flooding the engine. So either the map is bad (map including settings), or somehting else is wrong (something being vac leak, wires wrong, etc etc).

the fact that u take it off and its fine means its the afc most likely. what map are u using? I can send u the one i use, i had a member here i helped whos was somehoe corrupting wherever he was dling it.

www.t3rbow.com/afc.zip

try that supermap and upload it before u turn the car on. make sure u have
9.x in most of the cells. if u have lower u are adding way to much fuel.

at idle (vac settings) u should be at 10's till 1 psi cause u want to leave it stock till boost. if irs lower than 10 the map is probably messed up, take a screenshot if ur map doesnt help and ill see what i can do.

i do want to add, that when its hot out, mine even stock would have idle issues, theres something with the msp that when its warm out, it does that. but u shouldnt be having the issues u are.

Thanks for the help, but believe me I tried everything that is humanly possible. The map is correct and so are the settings. It is the unit that is broken or something. Like I said I have been running it for a year and it just recently started to act up strangely. I re-uploaded the map and put the right settings, but nothing works.

Like my 1st one last year, it is mostly the unit that is broken. It should not even be changing the signal at idle because it is under 1 psi (over pressure settings) and it does, so it must be the unit changing the O2 signal to make him go into an open loop (how the AFC works in boost) so the idle gets messed up. Thats my theory, but again that might be something else, but one think for sure its the AFC that is not doing something right.

Im using the supermap by the way.

Thanks

oh, i didnt know this was so long or what u tried. ive had 2 units and havnet had any issues. i guess its the unit from the way you put it but the v1 and v2 units are pretty solid from all the ones ive dealt with. have u called split second?

Both units that failed on me were V1. I did contact SS last year for my 1st one and they would not give me any warranty work even though DSMConvert wrote on the forum that a lifetime warranty was applicable.

I sent them an email too yesterday so waiting on their respond.

*** Whats the setup.exe in the zip file by the way?

for the r4 software.

yea dsm doesnt handle the afc anymore so, i guess that doesnt help lol.

ken with PG is pretty good with them, im more of a hands on type so i cant really give you any awesome advice over the internets.

i hope they take care of u. talk to mark, hes not really the best to talk to in terms of personality but he knows the unit inside and out.

It is not even possible to test it out ourself with all that black glue inside !!! Who is Mark? A guy at SS?

thanks

yea they dont really repair them cause of the epoxy. they are kinda disposable i guess.

yea mark is one of the engineers.

this only happens to me when i try to start up a new fresh map from scatch and i load it up the afc. the only way i make my custom map is by making changes to the superstock map. both maps could be exactly the same with settings and everything, but for some reason the afc does not let me start a map from strach, i have to make changes to the superstock map.

and the same thing happend to the v2 and v1 for me.

What happens with a map from scratch? The AFC runs badly?

yea idles lean then stalls. i was not able to get the car to idle for more than 5 mintues. changes in the cells did not do anything either.

for me, it was the map that was the problem. why do i have to use the superstock map and make changes to that instead of starting a new map with the same exact settings? i still have no idea.

I've experienced the lean condition a handful of times myself with the V1 over the few years I've had it. Now, I don't have the leaning out problem any longer. Instead, the AFC makes my car run rich, outside and in boost. Even before the engine reaches 0psi, it's already off the charts rich at part throttle. This is all with the superstock map loaded. And no matter how much fuel i pull with custom maps, it still runs rich! I've learned that the vacuum/boost location is very critical for the afc. I need to redo my line ASAP. Hopefully that'll be the end of the problems. However, when looking at the map chart in real time, the boost/rpm seem to match that of the gauges except at full boost, the gauge reads 1psi higher.

Hummm that is weird and interesting at the same time. Were you building your map in R4 or Excel?

I checked my vaccum/boost too and it matched my gauge as well. The AFC should not even be changing the signal outside of the boost (lower than the over pressure setting, usually 1psi). When you said you tried some custom maps you mean leaning out the vaccum section or?

The first weeks my car war running lean at idle, but now it is extra rich. I can smell gaz and everything and then it stalls. The O2 signal must be affected by the AFC now so it is like the "over pressure" settings is not working, but then again values of "10" is all over the place in the map so the signal should not even be affected.

the map isnt just a map. It has other settings in there. its more a database than a map. I think when u start from scratch, it resets EVERYTHING to a default. And i know youve gone through all the settings you can see, but theres got to be somehting somewhere that either we cant get to, or miss each time.

thats just my thoery.

can u take screen shots of your settings screens and map?

maybe i can compare it to mine. I say screenshot so theres no way it can change over the xfer.

yea thats what i thought to, i just could not figure out the difference, but i knew there was.
