i was poking around my engine bay and noticed my aem filter is extremely dirty...can I take it off and wash it off or something and reinstall or should I buy a replacement filter?

K&N sells recharge kits for their filters, they should work on AEM's filter too.

Don't just wash it like that, if you want to find out what exactly is done to clean a filter you can go to K&N's website and find the directions for using their recharge kit.

Or you could just buy a new K&N filter.

I WASH MINE WITH A SMALL DROP OF NON BLEACH TIDE IN WARM WATER. LET IT SOAK FOR 5 MIN AND WASH OUT. THE WATER MIGHT TURN COLOUR IF THE FILTER IS COLOURED. IT ALL OK

uhh yeah... let's type broken english in CAPS and then let's just remove ANY oil from the filter so that it doesn't filter anymore!

I forgot to mention that I use FAB 1 on the filter after I clean it. I ride a dirt bike and have a 1949 hot rod and I know how to keep a air filter clean. Give it a rest buddy! If your going to lose sleep over me using CAPS and typing some bad English you have some real problems. I posted because I had some information to share unlike yourself.

(lol)He's a classic!

Use a K&N recharge kit. It comes with cleaner and oil. I just cleaned my Injen filter the other day, and it worked great!

First, shake the filter to dislodge any big stuff that it caught. A couple of swipes with a clean paint-brush also helps. Now spray the cleaner onto the surface of the filter, inside and out. Let soak for 10 minutes or so, then rinse it out with a garden hose, making sure that you spray the inside of the filter. That way you aren't forcing debris farther into the filter.
When the filter's clean, let it dry and spray oil on every exposed part of the filter element. Wait a few minutes, and give it another spray with the oil, just to make sure that the whole filter's soaked.

Your filter is now like new! :)

Also, whatever you do and however tempting it may be, DO NOT use compressed air to dry the filter while it's wet. You'll get some nice holes in the fabric that can be repair by ordering a new filter!
