Hey all,

Thinking of replacing my factory spark plug wires with some thicker aftermarket ones that match the engine bay interior. I was running an errand the other day at Pep Boys and saw a few different kinds. I guess what I am curious about is what is a sufficient diameter of the wire (8, 8.8, etc..) and is there a brand and retailer you all recommend? Also, are Idridium plugs worth the $$$? Pics of your wire setup would be a plus, since I am just starting under the hood and could use some ideas. Any and all advice is appreciated!

sparcko is the way to go for the wires they have a deal right now, i think its right below a $100 for wires and really good plugs.
just go to search and look for their website, ill look realy quick and post it.

Iridiums may be a little too cool for a N/A motor. Having said that, some people swear that their car came stock with iridiums. Mine came with standards. I just did my 30k and replaced with ordinary Bosch platinums, which work just fine.

Yep, agree with the other guys, there are two main sets of plug wires you can choose from for the 2.0L Protege motor.

The Sparkco wires and Magnecor.

If you go with Sparkco they have a package for plugs and wires and you can choose the color you want:

Without Plugs: http://www.sparkcoonline.com/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=3

With Plugs: http://www.sparkcoonline.com/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=23

To my best knowledge the magnecor wires only come in red:
Protege5Online: http://www.protege5online.com/For_Sale_Page/Magnecor_Wires/magnecor_wires.html

CorkSport: http://www.corksport.com/main.php3?primNavIndex=0&mainURL=/store/index.php3?cat=220746 (Scroll down)

I have had 2 sets of Sparkco wires and have been 100% happy with both of them. I had them on my protege5 and now I have a set on my Mazdaspeed.

I just ordered my set of sparkos...but I have a question or 2.

It says that its a 2 wire kit? So it only replaces 2 wires? I don't understand? Also is it necessary to change the plugs as well? I only have 5K miles on my car so I know my plugs should still be good but don't know if the stock plugs can handle this wire or I need to upgrade. Thanks in advance!

Yes it's a 2 wire kit. On the 2.0L protege there are only 2 wires because it is a distributorless ignition.

Not necessary to change the plugs, but might be a good idea depending on your mileage. Your stock plugs should still be fine with only 5k miles on them. The wires should be good for the life of your car.

I've changed back and forth a couple times between my sparkos and the stock wires and she runs a lot smoother with the sparkos no doubt. A good investment.
