Is it me or does our ac really suck on days that are 90 degrees and above? I noticed it gets cooler when u hit the freeway or when you are driving around but once u hit a stop light it isnt as cold...

air moving across the condenser definitely helps on 90+ degree days; I can't say that the A/C on either my MS3 or my Mazda5 is any worse than others I've had (namely Honda).

Are you using recirculate? The A/C cools air it takes in. If it's taking in 100 degree air, there won't be as much cooling. If you use recirculate, the air it's taking in is gradually cooled by the output. Mine does fine on these horrible days. It's comfy within 8-10 minutes.

You might try winding it up a bit at traffic lights to give the compressor some help. I try to hold mine at 1K while the air is cooling the oven.

I've noticed the exact same thing on my '08 MS3 with 18k miles. I feel like the AC is getting weaker by the month and was thinking of taking it to the dealership to see if they can fix it. They recharged my Protege5 years ago for the same issue.

I miss R12, dangit. Who needs trees?

I feel ya. Them young whippersnappers don't know what real freon is. (rlaugh)

I'm happy with mine, though I agree that it's better once the car is in motion. You want the world's worst AC, drive an RX8 on a hot day. It's barely better than just driving with the windows down.

Can it beat the early Civics? Turning off the AC on a 1.5/1.6l was enough to jerk your neck... like a 50 shot of NAWZ. Had to get a running start if you want to go up a hill with the AC on!

There is a TSB that talks about a cutoff for the A/C when the motor and/or coolant reach a certain temperature. I can't find it but I've had this occur as well. It's normal in hot weather.

EDIT - Here it is:

Mine works just fine. Hit the auto let it run in full circ mode then when one the highway I take outside air. I still feel the the systems now days are much better then the cars from the 70s and 80s. Those things became junk after 50000 miles.

Just a thought... check the engine temperature on the dashboard and verify it is at the half-way point under normal conditions once the engine's warmed up.

I found that the A/C was also not working well around the same time it was discovered that my MS3 had a bad thermostat (only at 18K and about 2 years old). I noticed the radiator fan running longer when the engine was shut off and could hear it once in while at stop signs but temperature gauge on dashboard was fine. However, after a couple weeks the temperature gauge started to go beyond its normal halfway mark and that's when I had it checked by a Mazda dealership (and started driving with the heater at full blast). The thermostat was replaced under warranty by the dealership. A/C is much cooler now.

There are other posts on forum about MS3 thermostats failing early (more than I would have expected).
