Cloudy? damn its sunny here not a cloud in the sky warn nice but too much pollen W00t W00t my wheels came in today when i go back to work im gonna put em on. ooh yea the poll im gonna stick to the MSP on the "ALL around" car

Last to first

Spec V - For starters the Spec doesn't excite me. More importantly I feel it's time for a complete body overhaul on that car. Nothing bad about the nissan but nothing great either.

Civic Si - I love the reliability of Honda's but my purchase wasn't based solely on reliability. It would be a much better car to mod but my knowledge is limited enough that performance mods are not my first concern.

Focus SVT - Well, it's a mixed bag. It gets consistant reviews and performace wise is very similar to the MSP. I just don't like the bubble butt look. It is a big enough turn off that even the "A" or "Z" plan price didn't even cause me to consider it.

SRT-4 - I cannot deny this is the best bang for your buck in the short haul. Nothing parrallels it's pony/$ ratio. However, IMO it looks a little slapped together and the wing screams "look out! I Might clothesline you at any time!". It's too freakin big!

Cooper S - I like this car alot. It's got that unique "Mini" look and the options availible are more than plenty. The equipment packages aren't prefabed and boxed in like all american and Japanese makes. This is huge plus for the Mini. I'm actually trying to talk my girlfriend into one now.

Mazda Speed- IMO it doesn't have an overwhelming "boy racer" look which is very good (in black though). It brutally lacks in horses where the SRT takes the cake. But the balance is there for the MSP. It's enough of everything I wanted and the price is reasonable. I didn't buy it for the fuel economy but the MPG is nowhere near the listed stats! Not even close! I drive a ton so this can be an issue for some.

All have strong suits and I think that many are great market offerings that blend fun and economy. However, when side by side personal opinion is paramount.

Had to vote for the mini! don't get me wrong I love Mazda, but in this price range the cooper S will out handle all of them. I've driven all the cars listed with the execption of the SRT and the SVT and the cooper was one the most fun experiences I've had in a long time with an econo box. It may not have the best 0-60 and 1/4 times out of the box but pulling close to a G on the skid pad (not sure of the excat number) definitly makes up for it. Besides as soon as it came out one of the mini tuners in europe already had a kit to push it to 200HP.

:)

Again love the Mini's from their beginning, great car overall.

One thing nice about this grouping is it fully shows the number of choices out there in the sport compact segament. Theres are ones for people who want straight line performance, cornering performance, looks, options etc.

Hopefully the auto industry keeps them coming :)

I remeber reading in some car magazine about a company that offers some kind os upgrade on the Mini Cooper S. It was a supercharger or something. Damn I wish I could find the article. Anyway, it pushed the HP up to 250. That would be insane.

The Cooper S is Supercharged. But yes; there is the "Works" version just mentioned in my last AutoWeek. It has about 200hp, and will cost nearly $30,000.

No this was some aftermarket company and it was 250hp. That number is stuck in my head. I'm gonna look through my car magazines tonight.

You've got to be kidding me... I typed all that out and now have to do it again? In any case, please do take my opinions as unbiased, since I don't own any of them. :) Sigh, here goes (again) from best to worst.

Mazdaspeed- Best balance overall for the money. Strong power for its size, superb handling, good brakes, sharp styling, comfortable seats, spartan-yet-attractive interior, good interior room and cargo space, Japanese quality, excellent warranty, exclusiveness. Cons: Potentially difficult to modify, crash ratings aren't the best.

Mini Cooper S- Very close to the MSP in my mind. Small, agile, and very quick for the size of the engine. BMW quality, head-turning looks (even my MOM notices these things), comfortable interior (although a bit quirky on the style). CONS: Small... too small for me. I need more cargo space than what it has to offer. I can also see myself getting tired of the "look at me!" styling after a few years. Difficult to find here in TX (few dealers).

Focus SVT- These 3 are all very close. SVT has a strong NA engine, excellent handling characteristics, even without a LSD. Very supportive, comfortable seats and well laid out interior (again, kind of quirky on the styling though). Lots of cargo space, relatively good build quality (believe it or not) and fit/finish, as well as a good warranty for the '03s. CONS: You're going to use the warranty... possibly quite a bit. :( Styling hasn't entirely grown on me, and after 3 years of this body style, that's not a good sign.

Sentra Spec V- Hard car to beat for the price. I've seen it as low as $15k BRAND NEW at some dealers. It gets a bad rap from the magazines. I like the big 2.5L I4 (big as my V6! ), solid NA power (and power potential), high class handling, subtle exterior styling, comfortable interior/space, good cargo room, Japanese build quality. CONS: still not sure about the interior styling, and the warranty is sub-par in today's market (3/36k is outdated).

VW GTI 1.8T- My own addition. I honestly can't decide if it goes before or after the Spec V. It's a good platform with room for TONS of horsepower and impressive handling... with mods. Very luxurious, sexy interior, unbelieveably comfortable seats, sharp, classy exterior. Good warranty, pretty good cargo space. CONS: Sloppy suspension from the factory. Lots of body roll, doesn't feel half as confident as the MSP at not nearly the same speeds. Electronic throttle makes you feel really disconnected from the car, as does the soft shifter. Potentially irritating VW customer service and quality issues.

Neon SRT-4- An absolute BEAST on the strip, and tons of potential to make it even beastlier. Good seats (little tight for bigger people), excellent warranty, good cargo space. CONS: UGLY AS SIN. I'm sorry, it isn't nice, but it's true. Handles like a pig (and as of now, nothing you can do about it... apparently the suspension has been redone in such a way that it can't handle being lowered up front). Loud as poo, and not in a good way.

Civic Si- Nothing bad about this car, but nothing good either. It's a very "meh" car. Honda reliability/quality, good cargo space, lack of a "premium fuel only" badge, extremely comfortable seats and logical dash setup (aside from the bizarre shifter). CONS: Also quite ugly. Looks like a 2-door Odd-essy. Shifter is just strange, suspension/handling sucks, and the engine is mediocre at best.

There, I'm done. Again. :o

Sorry. I had to make an adjustment - an addition; as it were (left out the Focus SVT). Your comments are well received. Thanks again!

Well, for me it was find a new car with 4 seats to replace the 91 300zx twin turbo. It had to have much better gas mileage and much better autox handling, since that is my main fun thing to do with a performance car.

The autox requirement right away put the cars with LSD at the top of the list: Spec V and MSP. And the intro drive article in SCC where they said it knocked the Acura Integra Type R off the top of the mountain in handling put it over the top for me. I went to the Internet to find a dealer who would sell it at MSRP and went in to put my deposit down last October. Got it in January and haven't stopped smiling since. It is AWESOME on two lane twisties (better than the 300zxtt), and has great gas mileage too. I'm getting 26 to 27 mpg on a 22 mile in town commute.

I didn't know about the SRT-4 then, but it really didn't change my mind when I found out about it. I had a 95 Neon and it was ok, but the MSP is just way nicer than that for everyday living. I guess I'll find out at the autox if the SRT-4 is an overdog in DS.

Spec V was my second choice in October and I came close to buying one when they first came out. But the shifter on my test drive was very balky, so I passed. I've tested an 03 Spec V and the shifter is much improved. Can't fix the beam rear axle though. It's fine around town, but on the autox course at the limit I think it would hold the car back.

Honda Civic was greatly anticipated, but Grassroots Motorsport magazine couldn't make one handle at autox even with Ground Control coilovers, so no dice for me. If Honda had brought over the Civic Type R, I would have bought it in a minute back then.

Acura RSX Type S was also considered, but it was $3500 more and has the same suspension as the Civic.

Subaru WRX was considered, but it was $4500 more and out of my price range. Nice car, but more motor than handling.

All in all, it's a great time to be buying a sport compact car. Lots of choices! But I love my Mazdaspeed!

Well, I had to vote for mine: the MSP! :D

Not only because I love it, but for a couple of reasons:

1- I never had Mazda before, so before buying this one, I read a lot on all the cars in this category:

- The Mini: Way too small!! My car is my office, I need room!

- The Sentra Spec V: nice specs, but personally, I find the outside look very basic and I don't like the instruments/dash/gauges. The only reason I almost bought one is becuase it's less expensive and I could get one right away (instead of waiting 4 months)

- The Civic Si (SiR here is Canada): ... (bang) how could Honda do this car? they had so much success with the 90-95 hatchback and the 96-00 Coupe, how did they come up with this?? nothing is right on this car, not even the color!

- The Focus SVT: ... "have you driven a Ford lately?", personally, no, my Escort 83 was enough! I know this car is way better, but I dind't even mind looking at the specs or the price when I bought my MSP... this shows you how much I like Ford! ;)

- The Neon SRT-4: ... my wife has a Neon (not SRT) and I keep making jokes in it! I would look kind of stupid to buy one after that! :D The Neon has the most power in all of those cars, and probably the best seats... but I don't trust the long term realibility of this car. And as fot he look, I'd buy a PT Cruiser Turbo before that! Another con: Way too expensive!!!!

- THE Mazdaspeed: For the price, I think this is the best package available right now on the market. it might not have the power of the Neon, but it sure has great handling. A friend of mine has a WRX and he tried my car. His comments: the handling is very close to his and if you consider it's $10,000 less (Canadian), it has a lot of power (did I mention I run at 9psi?:) )

and I just found out my production # (thanks AGR#7):
#1 of 250 in Canada.. woohoo!

Senile? AGR did you have an episode?

Ok...
Mini Coop looks "Way too oil my Butt"
Focus : good car poor fit and finish. Cheap is a+
Spec-V is ok but it just doesnt do anything for me.
Honda is about exciting as a loaf of bread.
Neon well...
1. Its like a strong White man trying to dance. Hes got the power but just cant get the moves. But he may kick your ass if you laugh at him. Provided he dosent have to run too far or turn too quick.
2. It looks like ass on 4 wheels.
3. Like a 500 horse tractor quick on takeofff but plows through the turns.
4. Will be broke faster than a drunk Co-ed in Vegas.
5. Looks like something only a muppet would drive.

So I pick the MSP yes shocker to all present the MSP for looks, quality, and just because I ****** like it.

Wow I get better than 31 MPG. Of course I drive about 100 miles a day and I usally do 60 MPH for over a hr with very little variation
in speed. I work 7:30 to 4:30 so I normally miss the worst of the traffic. I am very mindfull of my gas consumption. I get 220 miles out of half a tank. I shift under 3k RPM and I shift 1,3,5 most of the time and ease up to 60. Unless of course it's 3 am on a weekend coming home from a 12 hr LAN down a well lit I-35 South.:D
I usally put 12. some odd gallons in when I fill up.

As gas mileage goes; the best I have gotten is 23.6 mpg. I usually average about 22.5.

ok i re-voted in your poll, MSP still tops in my book :)

although, in case people havent' seen it yet, Mopar will be offering turbo upgrades for the SRT-4, up to 300ftlb/300hp!!!!

A quicker way to die......(chair) --- That's crazy power in such a small car, that should only be in the hands of very qualified drivers. Not 17, 18, 19,,,,,,,etc,,,etc,,,year olds!

Well, all these cars were on my shopping list, so I feel I'm pretty unbiased even though my choice was the Mazdaspeed.
Mini Cooper - too mini for me (no backseat room). Very expensive too.
SRT-4 - Crackerjack of a car, but less refined than the Mazdaspeed, and with a new transmission and unknown reliability of the turbo engine, its off the list.
Civic Si (or SiR in Canada) - don't like the exterior styling. Great seats though.
Spec V - best bang for the buck, undercuts all the other cars on the list by at least $4000 (in Canada).
Focus SVT - only second to the MSP in terms of handling. The best all around package second to the MSP.

I didn't find the SVT's handling to be as good as a spec's maybe I'm just biased...but I feel the HLSD of the spec acctually makes a huge diffrence when going in and out of corners.

the SVT focus in canada is expensive too!!!
