A Couple Questions from a n00b.

I should be getting my MSP early next week and I am very excited. I was reading thru the modders guide and i saw at the bottom the best bang for the buck section. It said MBC set at 9psi. I was just wondering if that was safe on these cars? From what i been hearing about the engine its blows around 10. Is this correct?

Also, my girlfriend will be getting me something for my birthday and i was wondering if i should get the Boost Gauge and the pod or a Turbo Timer?

Where can I get the JoeP MBC? I have a MBC on my Eclipse but i dunno if it will be sufficient. I ordered it off of ebay. This is it HERE . It does spike around 15 and settles around 12 or 13. Are boost spikes that dangerous to these cars?

I am new to these cars. I have been browsing the forums quite a bit lately researching. I am not new to cars or turbo cars. I have mainly been a DSM guy but I want to get into something diffrent.

alot of people will tell you to (rudely) search, but i'll be kind :)

the amount of boost one can run on these cars depends on whats on it. 9psi is about the limit for one of these cars stock. adding things like a better intercooler, exhaust and engine management gives you a little room to play with. there have been some "factory freaks" as well that have run much higher boost levels on stock running gear. even so, on a stock or mostly stock mazdaspeed i would not go above 9, personally.

a good EMS with a proper tune does alot in regards to keeping things safe under the hood. boost spikes are not friendly to these engines over time. keep in mind that unlike cars such as the SRT4, from the factory there is nothing really done to the MSP to the engine - internally it is the same engine as you will find in any other protege from that era.

be sure to drop me a line with any questions you might have on these cars and the parts for them.

welcome to the forums!

get the blitz dual tt. its a turbo timer/boost gauge all in one. the only thing is that it reads in metric units.

The engine will not respond well to abuse. The connecting rods and bolts are the weak link in this engine. Add too much boost and load to the equation and it could prove to be fatal.

If I were you, I'd look in to a boost control device that offers two stages. That way you can keep stage one at the stock setting and use stage 2 to add a little more boost on demand. Its also a good idea to upgrade the anemic factory intercooler. Its prone to heatsoak and should have never been used in the first place on these cars.

Good luck to you when you get yours.

ok, seems noone answered your question regarding what to buy first...

i would advice to buy a boost gauge, because you can be the "manual turbo timer" just leave the engine idleing 45 seconds before shutting it down....don't worry too much about turbo timer...sinc eour turbos are water cooled...it is a good mod nonetheless, but it is far more important to know how much you are boosting....the wastegate actuator is prone to failure ever with low miles and it'll make you boost 15 psi on a spike!!! very very bad...

get the boost gauge and then save some more for the turbo timer....

actually....ANYONES first mod should be a Boost Gauge, i don't care how broke you are....

congrats on the MSP, your gonna love the car. I live in richmond, IN not to far from you there is a show in dayton on the 10th. pm me for the info, if interested

We eat, sleep, and breath MAZDASPEED. I own one myself too. Nothing can replace experience when modifying the MSP. I can help you get to a HP goal or fix any problems you may encounter with the car. If you need any help, let me know and I will get you on the right track. I am not on here just to make sales.

PS. Don't believe everything you read on here, it could be dangerous for your car!

I dont have much money or time right now with the car payment, working, and going to school full time. My goal for the moment is to be in the mid-high 14's. I want an exhaust J-pipe back, and a hard piping kit. I dont know what kind of bov, probably a HKS SSQV or a GReddy, but i want to relocate my maf. I wanted to do this with my DSM using the GM maf, but it was to expensive. I will probably just buy a K&N filter that goes on the maf replacing the stock air box. I might buy a silicone intake tube. I dont really need a CAI, they dont make a big enough diffrence. I will be getting a boost gauge and pods for my birthday. I have a boost controller but i think it needs a stiffer spring, it does spike a little.

If you are going to up the boost get a wideband A/F guage to go with the boost guage. The exhaust will make it alot easier for the car to breath. The MSP has two cats which really causes a flow problem with the exhaust.

without a boost gauge you are only gonna want to up the boost by creating more flow via exhaust and upgraded IC and piping. That alone should have your stock boost up to ~8psi and it will be a much more efficient and safe 8psi. With a IC and exhaust id run 10psi with good gas unflashed. If you are looking for easy power look into a unichip, it will get you running high boost safely on an almost stock msp. 14psi spike, 10@redline safely.

What if i get hard piping, corksport or vibrant exhaust, intake, and boost gauge. I assume the boost will be around 8psi according to the last post. What if i get my ECU flashed? Would it go above 10? I dont think i want to get the boost above 10 without the money to build a block incase i blow the stocker, unless it is completly safe of course.

You won't blow the motor if you mod your car correctly. I have a "how to" for beginners but its in my head so if you get stuck and want some help, get me on the phone.
