Have a 99 protege and this is the 3rd belt that I replace this year.last one was a month ago. Had to get towed to the house. It is the same belt. And when I go to Autozone for a belt they tell me that it is a serpintine belt well my engine is a 2 belt system. Any of you have this prob woth the 99 model.

are you talking about one of the accessory belts or the timing belt? How is the belt wearing out? does it just rip apart or slide of?

Although we have a two belt system, it is still considered a serpentine belt. I don't have a 99 either, but I thought I'd share a few things that have run through my head concerning the belts. I have an 02 and although my belts have lasted more than a year, I have experienced a failure. The belt for the water pump and generator did break on me. The belt for the A/C compressor and powersteering has six ribs, whereas the waterpump/generator belt only has four. The smaller belt broke on me at 45,000 miles. When I replaced them, I found very little wear on the larger belt.

Recently, I replaced my motor and found that the smaller belt was in need of replacement and once again, the larger belt was in great condition. At that point, I had put another 75k miles on the motor. The replacement belt went 30k more miles than the OEM belt and was still intact. I feel the Gates belt that I installed after the first failure was well worth the extra couple of dollars than the other options offered at the parts store.

There are pretty big differences in belt manufactures. I've had good luck with Gates and Goodyear. Since this has been a reoccurring problem for you, I'd get in the habit of inspecting weekly. Another factor to consider is belt tension. Is it possible that you overtightened? Did you test belt deflection after your last replacement? Also, check for proper pulley alignment and inspect the pullies for irregularities.

Well when I went to both O'rielys and Autozone both stated that the
99 model protege 1.6 has a 1 belt system. I have 2. One for the Alternator & waterpump and the other one goes to the A/C and powersteering. They state that I may have a early production date and they put in a 98 engine.wtf
I don't know if I'm making sense,since I'm confused as well (help)

it must rip off since it is the inner belt and the on for the A/C and powersteering is still in-place

I think it has 2 belts,as you said, one for pwr steering and A/c, and other for alternator and water pump, but i have no longer the protege, so i can't check,

hope this helps

BTW, I never had a problem with any of my belts

all right, i just checked the workshop manual and the ZM engine has 2 belts,
one is the generator belt with water pump as you said, and the other is for PS+A/C

The generator belt should have 8.0 mm or 0.31 inches of deflection, and the PS+A/C should have 11.5mm or 0.45 inches

Hope this helps

i have the 1.6, it does have 2 belts for sure, i have recalled a guyon here had the same problem , it was his altenator actually causing it to pop let me see if i can dig it up..
