Hello the room!

I am in the process of replacing the water pump (and basically everything within reach while I'm in there) and am trying to remove the old water pump. No matter how I turn or maneuver it, there doesn't seem to be enough clearance for it to come out. I have literally been at it for a couple of hours. (huh)

Have loosened & moved the PS pump bracket, so it is not interfering. No mention of anything extra in the Chilton manual. Do I need to move the engine? Any wisdom for this Mazda n00b?

Thanks in advance....very useful forum.

Have you removed the timing belt?I've done like 3 pumps and never had a problem when using just a haynes manual. It may be the ciltons manual messing you up since there's a bunch of different models displayed in theirs. Any way to snap a pic and I may be able to help you furthur

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, timing belt, tensioner and idler pulley are out. Crankshaft pulley is out too. Everything is disconnected from the pump, and I can move it around quite a bit, but just not out of that space.

It seems like the only direction to go with it is down, since the camshaft sprockets are in the way otherwise. The dimensions of the pump just do not allow it out by any means that I can figure.

I was able to download a shop manual for the '96 Protege, and part of their procedure involves removing the #3 engine mount bracket and lifting the engine a bit. I can't visualize how this is going to help but I'll give it a shot. As soon as I punch this here timeclock in 40 mins. I'm on it.

Thanks again & cheers (drinks)

Yea there a pain to get out, I had the same prob. Knew it had to come out some way or another. Another stupid design by the car makers.

Good to see you got it fixed. I've personally never had to lift the motor. Idk.
