91 v 93 Octane?

Your 95 octane in Turkey is actually an equivalent of 90-91 octane here in US. The US gas is not worse than European gas, they just use different calculations to determine octane number - RON(Research Octane Number) in Europe and (RON+MON(Motor Octane Number))/2 in US.

Well...I sure hope so.

H/E...the last time I checked ~ 2 years ago...the gas was coming straight from accross the border (Iraq)....pft. Of course...that could change now.

....wait a sec... my brother owns an MS3 and my friend own an MS3... both an 08.5... so, direct experience, I do have... so base my argument on that... this being said, I could confidently agree with with all MS3 users when they say they knock at stock.... If you don't knock at 91, than that's great, but most MS3's do and there would be a benefit to getting 93.

and like I said, there must have been a reason for you to seldomly use an octance booster...

I will use octane boost when going to the track or planning on doing very hard driving... The only reason for this is to make absolutly sure there is no detonation due to extra heat build up... As I said before anything over 91 is a waste, if I had 93 available for only $0.03 a gallon more, I may be inclined to use it every so often... I will say again, it is an unnecessary thing to put over 91 octane fuel in the car...

This statement tells me you obviously have some doubts. If not, there would be no reason for the octance booster...

Anyway, I'm gonna convince my brother to switch vehicles with me for a week to do some logging... snowing now in Calgary for the last 2 days, so I'll wait till it dries up....

umm when im on the track i wear a helmet... this does not mean i plan on crashing, it simply means i want to be as safe as i can be... same principal here, with the stresses and heat created by track driving i will use octane booster to make sure there is no possibility of detonation, and that the computer will not cut power (in this extreme situation) to prevent knock... this does not mean i have doubts about the fact that the car is tuned for 91 octane and that it should run fine on it.
i dont know what the deal is with the mazdas youve encountered, but if "ms3s all knock on 91" then california is screwed...

Then all the users in the post I listed above I guess are screwed with 91, which is why they complain about it... How bout you relax... if your not gettin' any KR, so be it... a lot of others are, AND THEY would benefit with higher octane, YOU WON'T...

i am perfectly relaxed dude you seem to be the one flipping out because i am stating why 93 gives worse gas mileage, and that the car is tuned for 91 because of california DOT law...
if you actually had real experience with an MS3 as a DD and didnt just know people who had them, i would suggest you run whatever octane you want...
i hear diesel has a really high octane rating that must be better for the engine then...

OMG...

MS3'S HAVE A KR ISSUE AT STOCK. MANY USERS HAVE POSTED THIS AND COMPLAINED ABOUT IT. THESE MANY USERS ARE NOT LYING. 93 WOULD BENEFIT THEM BECAUSE THEY HAVE KR. THE HIGHER OCTANE WILL HELP REDUCE/ELIMINATE THIS KR PROBLEM THAT THESE NON-LYING USERS HAVE. YOU DON'T HAVE KR. GREAT FOR YOU. CONTINUE BUYING 91. END OF STORY.

If your talking about mileage, then stay out of this KR talk regarding octane.

I don't use octane booster...

lol who needs to calm down now?
the OP asked what we use and why and if there would be any harm in using 91... i stated that i use 91, that the car is supposed to run on 91, and later the reasons why 91 gets petter fuel mileage than 93...
i stick by my argument that 91 is fine...
i agree with other posts cautioning against etOH because even though it raises the octane, it will also cause detonation because the energy density is less than pure gasoline... which is also why it is cheaper, you get much poorer fuel mileage so you pay less per gallon and fill up 2x as much...

I tend to mix it up. The lower quality gas stations around here (Kroger, Thorntons, Marathon, etc..) all use 91 octane. But Shell and BP have 93. I try to get 93 whenever I can, but there is not a conveniant Shell or BP near me. I don't really notice a difference.

I have never had any issues running 89 and above. I ran three tanks of 89 back to back (about 900 miles) and it was fine. That was over 9,500 miles ago too. She acts the same before the 89 as she does now.

It's simple. Run 91. If you get knocking, run 93. You can even run 89 like I do, if you don't get knocking there's not a damn thing wrong with it. You might get a little less power when the engine computer does it's thing of adjusting the parameters to compensate for any knocking it detects.

Higher octanes don't give you any more "power." Higher compression engines make more power. Octane is a measurement of the fuel's resistance to spontaneously igniting (knocking) when compressed.

If you notice less power with 89, it's because your ECU is pulling timing because it senses pre-detonation... so use 91 or higher.

What are you guys using to monitor this?

STAY AWAY FROM PETRO!!

Sucks ass. Used same 91 map (half tank) with all major brands in AB and petro had the stupidest most f'd up knock ever. I was better off using 87 from anywhere else....

Husky/Mohawk 94eth - Best

Husky/Mohawk 92eth - Extremely Good

Shell 91 - Suprisingly, very good (would almost prefer over 92eth cause it's non-ethanol). Same knock results (for the most case) as the 92eth. Under 2 KR, if any...

Esso 91 - O.K. Knocking around 1-3 on full throttle runs
Petro 91 - Leave the hell alone.... higher than 6 KR

Agree totally on the Mohawk fuel ;) Been using the 92eth blend in Edmonton
from day 1 and it's been great. Switched to the 94eth blend recently (as soon as it was avail at my local gas station) and immediately observed a 2mpg increase for that tank of gas. Next fill up was still 1+ mpg better than my best previous. So middle of winter, combined highway/city driving " I'm getting 25.5mpg atm.

laters,

When you say "most MS3's" knock, do you have some hard numbers on this? Just curious... and by the way direct experience means you own one, not your bro or friends... happy to listen if yo have some hard facts to back up your statements...

If many complaints (on this forum) from many other users ain't hard enough facts for you, than your calling all of them liars, or whatever you view me as... plus, when my brother first got his car, I logged a bunch of different things including KR, and he was having minor issues... minor, but still there. With the dashhawk in my hand, that's good enough for me.

..and btw.... go to this link and read... this is all the hard facts you should need... or your just too stubborn to accept the fact that it happens to lots of your vehicle...
