Ive heard it a few times and tried finding more info on it. Im probably not looking in the right places, but I did try to utilize the search but not many complete answers come up.

I need an engine and most recyclers here want 750+ for a protege 2.0 engine and that is more than i can afford right now, but i was told that i could use a 626 engine which is over half the cost of a p5 engine, but in my searching some have mentioned that the cam gear would need to be changed as possibly the crank pulley. Is this about accurate? What else would be required?

The long block should be the same.

Just swap all of the peripherals (intake, exhaust, crank pulley, etc.) from the P5 engine to the new engine.

i have a 2.0 from a 626 in my car right now. basically the same except I think one of the small m8 bolts for the trans didnt line up. everything else was the same.

Mazda didn't change the engine mounting points on these cars, so anything from a Mx3,mx6,626,millenia, protege or even the ford probe, bolts right up to the protege.

The biggest difference that you may see is in the wiring.
