6 speed tranny?

This is going to give away my ignorance but oh well. My MP5 runs around 3500-4000 rmp on the highway when I'm driving around 70. With gas being the way it is these days I was wondering if it would be possible to put a 6th gear into a MP5 tranny. I know absolutely nothing about transmissions but I was wondering about this on the drive home today. Would there be any way to put maybe a 6 speed tranny from a Toyota Matrix in it? This is probably crazy talk but again I was curious.

Another thought, could you drop a rotary engine from an RX-7 or RX-8 into a MP5? Just curious (shrug)

Umm... in paragraph one you complain about gas prices then in paragraph two you talk about putting a rotoary engine in your P5. Make a decision...power or economy. You can't have both. The rotory engines take premium fuel and get significantly worse gas mileage.

But notice how I said...just wondering. You're right. I wouldn't want to do that but I was just curious if it COULD be done.

Which again brings us back to saving money. If you want a six-speed or better gas mileage, trade your car in for a Hybrid or buy a Diesel and run of veggie power (www.greasecar.com). As soon as you start transplanting transmissions and engines you will go way over the budget of saving money.

It can be done but it would be alot cheaper to just buy a 1986 Used Porsche 944 which is just starting to go fast at 80 Mph at a mere 2800 RPM in 5th.

I picked up a 944 for just over $2500 UDS in Great running order. That will be alot cheaper than the $10,000 to re-design the Tranny box and make some new gears...
