5th to reverse?

I don't miss 4th when downshifting but i thought something was broke cuz in any other car with the same shift pattern you have to center the stick before going from 5th to reverse at any time. Even if the car isn't running.

I have been inside my tranny and mine does have a lock-out! I have no 3rd gear right now and have to shift from 2nd to 4th and talk about turbo lag trying to leave a herd of wild dogs! I was able to go from 2 to reverse but just ground enough to not even let me in! If you downshift from 5th and go to neutral you can then go into rev but you should not be able to go straight down from 5th to rev!

Only if you cross into neutral does the lockout release! Like in my case going from 2nd and crossing neutral to rev instead of 4th.

There is definately a lock-out mech for reverse in the MSP tranny. I just replaced the one inside S.A.MSP's tranny when we had the diff welded. It is about a $45-$50 part.

Glad to know it's normal. I found that out and was kinda worried. I've never missed 4th and hit rev but it is wierd that they didn't put a safety stop in. I'm really begining to think that this is the goofiest car mazda has ever made. It's like they said "Lets make a Speed Protege" and slapped a turbo and a big ass wing on it and called it good.

thank you for digging old topics up

Any chance you would have the part#? I went to the parts dept. and they didn't know what the hell I was talking about. How hard is it to replace? Do you have to pull the tranny and tear it apart?

Yep, mine does this to. Just be careful. I usually drop to 3rd at about70 and hammer the **** out of it so it has not be a problem for me.
However, I have almost done it a few times in the last 5 years.
My brain always says's, Hey isn't that reverse? And I go, Oh yeah it is D'OH!

I tore my tranny apart last year and I did not notice anything amiss.
What is it suppose to look like?

Maybe somehow I am going through neutral when I thought I was going straight down. It has only happened a handful of times.

I had my tranny looked at for some noises it was making, and while they had it open, they noticed the reverse lockout was broken... i had no idea! Maybe it's a relatively common issue with these transmissions?

Yeah, I can dig up the part # for you. It is inside the tranny. you have to remove the differential to get at it. I might even be able to get a picture for you...

Yeah it seems to be common...

The part # for the reverse lock-out mechanism is:
F520-17-480K
Mazda calls it the Guide Plate.
Here is a Pic:

Much appriciated. I'll see what they say now. But would not having it cause any problems as long as you don't put it in reverse while going foward? If that is the sole purpose of the part then I think I'll wait till I get my diff welded to replace it.

Yeah, I would just be careful until you do the Differential. I'm betting that the lever arm snapped and is stuck to the magnet at the bottom of the tranny. So long as it does not get into any of the gearing and you don't mis-shift into reverse, you'll be fine. If it's stuck to the magnet, it's not going anywhere. It would be really dumb not to do both at the same time...
