5th to reverse?

I am sure that this has been discussed before but I couldn't find any threads about it. So the story goes, I am sitting in front of my girlfriends' friend's house waiting for her to get there. Im sitting there in my car, bored, so i play around with the shifter. I find out that it goes from 5th to reverse. I know it's not suppose to, but it does.

  1. Is this a common problem?
  2. Is it a major problem?
  3. Can it be fixed
  4. if so, is it worth being fixed

Thanks for your time

Mine does that. It sounds really great when you are trying to downshift from 5th to 4th on the highway.
I took it to Roger Beasley Mazda and they told me and I quote from my invoice "vehicle operating as designed".
I have NEVER had a manual transmission that could shift from 5th to 4th at speed. Perhaps this is because of the LSD?
Anyone know if this is harmful?
Anyone know what can be done about this?

Mine does it to. They said "vehicle operating as designed." Even though the owner's manual clearly states that the car has a reverse lock-out to prevent accidental shifts into reverse.

I'm assuming you meant 5th to reverse.

I do have lockout, but only when moving.

It doesn't really have to do anything with shifting properly. Are you a service writer by chance?

Britt

yeah you cant s*** into reverse once you are movingm, there is a lock on it, but if your are just at idle standing stile you should go from 5th to reverse

Well, you aren't supposed to be able to do it, but some of the MSPs can, which is the problem.

actually i was joking, sord of, if you try to downshift to 4th, and put it in reverse, that IS shifting improperly...

Well, i obviously don't try to put it in reverse while at hwy speeds, however on a slow downshift even, it will go in. It seems like 4th and reverse are awfully close together. But regardless, the car is supposed to be equiped with a safety feature for poor drivers like myself who cannot seem to shift right. There is that better?

nope, i meant 5th to 4th.
When trying to go from 5th to 4th on a downshift to pass someone at speed it goes right into reverse and complains noisily about doing so.
The service advisor at Roger Beasley told me this is normal. This is the first manual transmission I have ever owned that doesn't have a reverse lock-out feature once you are moving.
Having this issue kinda makes it difficult to do a quick downshift.
Anyone know of a way to solve this issue?
Does anyone have any proof that this transmission should have a reverse lock-out?

I've had it where i'm in fifth gear and go to downshift into fourth gear and have had it grind when it reaches the reverse gear then it just slides into fourth after. but I am kind of lazy and just slide the shifter straight down then over into fourth instead of actually pulling down out of fifth into neutral and down into fourth (all i one quick movement) Used to it like that in my BMW

Glad to know it's normal. I found that out and was kinda worried. I've never missed 4th and hit rev but it is wierd that they didn't put a safety stop in. I'm really begining to think that this is the goofiest car mazda has ever made. It's like they said "Lets make a Speed Protege" and slapped a turbo and a big ass wing on it and called it good.

i know this thread is probably over, but how do you miss fourth and go into reverse. as long as your double clutching when you down shift you shouldn't even be near reverse

Humm 2 people with 34 posts combined revive a thread from 10-26-2004. "Mind ponders a little!!" Anywho you do not need to double clutch downshifting on normal roads!
