5AT vs 4AT much difference?

Anyone drive both the 5 and 4 speed automatic?

I just drove the 5AT and I'm wondering how it compares to the 4AT.

2008's?

New to forum... first post.

Just drove home 3 hours ago in a new '07 Sport 5M - nice little car.

I, too, was interested in an '08 Mazda 5, but local Mazda zone rep said that East Coast wouldn't see '08 models for at least 45+ days... - and probably won't be offering the 0% interest on the '08's in this market either -

If anything like the Mazda 3 Sport 2004 addition with a 4AT then changed to a 5AT it will have more get up and go at lower speeds. I think this will be a big change for the 2008 Mazda 5 for the better. I bet the fuel rating will increase also... but I don't have the specs yet.

Comparing the ratios between the two the spread from 1st to 2nd is much narrower. And that a GOOD thing! The spread between the two in the 4sp is just too damn far.

I am not technically knowledgeable about transmissions, gear ratios, etc... but would like to compare RPMs at 60mph for the 07 4AT and the 08 5AT.

Am hoping that the 5AT will be noticeably quieter at freeway speeds for the passengers compared to the 4AT.

Would appreciate if owner(s) of 07 4AT and owner/testdriver(s) of 08 5AT would post RPMs at 60mph.

Thanks in advance.

Need confirmation

I *think* I found the answer to my question re. RPM vs. MPH.

Found the gear ratios and tire size, used a program called "GearCalc" (by Peter Ogden), which yielded the following for top gear:

2007/08 5MT:
60MPH -> 2665 RPM
70MPH -> 3109 RPM

2007 4AT:
60MPH -> 2469 RPM
70MPH -> 2881 RPM

2008 5AT:
60MPH -> 2151 RPM
70MPH -> 2509 RPM

Would appreciate if owners of these various models would confirm.

Thanks!

Did you take into account the different final drive ratio of the 08's?

Yup. Got the gear ratios and final gear ratio and tire size from the 07 and 08 spec pdfs., then entered into the program GearCalc.

The program then calculates many, many things. The 60mph and 70mph are what I posted.

We have a 5MT in our 5. IIRC, the engine spins ~3500 @75mph. That would mean that the 70mph figure you posted is 1-200 rpm low. I'll try to check this evening or tomorrow to be sure I'm not giving you bad info.

That seems kinda high for a 5MT....I thought it would have been lower...Our 2003 MPV spins 2300 at 120km/hr...I was expecting the Mazda5 to be in that range with the 5MT/AT.

Attached are the files that contain all the data used by GearCalc.

Please verify that the gear ratios, final gear ratio, and tire size are correct.

I would expect that visual confirmation would be within +- 100rpm given the size of the dial and visual acuity.

Yup, this is very close. The missus had it at 110kph (70mph) on the highway the other night, and told me that it was reading just a touch over the 2,500RPM mark.

A noticeable difference in our mind (ears?) to the 4SPD AT at the same speed.

The load, if it makes a difference, was me, Mrs Sparkbhoy, 3yo Sparkybhoy Jnr, 3mo Sparkybaby Jnr, a Graco stroller, 2 car seats and a huge bag full of 'change of clothes for the kids', 2 bottles of Dasani and a bunch of Mrs Sparkybhoy's really bad CD's ("well, it is MY car, you've got your own car")

My 06 4AT
60MPH = ~2600 RPM
70MPH = ~3100 RPM
