5 Speed Tranny woes

This question is for people that lives in places with cold climates.

Has anyone noticed that when you drive the car in the morning it's hard to shift from 1st into 2nd then 3rd gear? It almost feels like the gear grinds but not really. I called my dealership today and told them about this problem and they said that it's normal because 2nd and 3rd gears are the "strong" gears and that I would get this until the tranny oil circulates and warms up. This is really annoying me and I never had this problem with my of my previous cars. Please tell me I'm not the only one with this annoying problem.

dont worry, u r just one of us now! :D

no for real, some of us have the same problem for a long time, all dealers say is normal... i know there has been some threads about this same problem many times, just do some searches here and there

A change to Redline MTL Tranny fluid will help, but not completely eliminate the problem. Its a real nice change though.

Whew! Thanks guys!! I thought I just have a bad tranny and alone on this. :p

Scott, I will definitely change the tranny fluid on my next oil change. Thanks for the tip!

I don't think that the dealer will change the tranny fluid from stock to redline MTL but i could be wrong....also, it'll probably cost you an arm and a leg....i plan on changing it myself next summer....as for the shifting, yeah winters suck. It should get easier after 10 minutes of warming up and 10 minutes of driving(when its minus 20 or colder)....remember though, there's a difference between "grinding" and stiff shifting.

Last nights low in manitoba was -28! Talk about a cold morning!(sad1)

-28 holy s***. I'm freezing my ass off here at 13. But i have a little trouble getting into first but thats it. Nothing much. But I do wanna change to the redline tranny fluid. A garage near me has a total tranny fluid maching that supposed to change all the fluid in the tranny in one shot. Is this pretty much the only way to change all the fluid? And how much is that tranny fluid?

I found out it's around $8.25 a quart. anyone know how many quarts are needed?

You'll need 3 quarts.
The manual says is will hold 2.9 quarts... IIRC...

I just picked up a small fluid transfer pump which works great to change tranny fluid. I have yet to change the fluid in my protege, but have changed it in my RX7 and the pump really came in handy for reaching the fill hole.

GOD DAMN!!! -18?? 13??? I COULDN'T EVEN SMOKE A CIGARETTE OUTSIDE LAST NIGHT AT 35-40 without a sweater, pants, shoes and socks... holy crap
