4 bolts, a broken heart, and 3 weeks later

:
Mazda, Mazdaspeed6
Rear diff mounts weak link.

In cojunction with too much enthusiasim, (4800 rpm launch, followed by a slower than required speed shift) can cause the differential to um, "re-align" itself in such a way that driving even 30 ft, let alone 2-10 miles to the dealer really doesn't feel or sound like a good idea.
moderate relief can be found by riding the e-brake to disengage rear drive, but that feels wrong too.

When I popped 2nd, the car was screaming; being fed by the first load of 92
octane that I could find in Hawaii after 600 miles on the digital odo. it was a rush to feel a stronger, more violent than normal pull and in the middle of the excitement, I fed too much power/shock through the drivetrain. fixed by the fine folks of maui cutter, under waranty but took 2 weeks due to the lack of parts for ms6 in inventory. BE CAREFUL

Parts damaged: one diff mount (cracked in half), 4 bolts (streached to destruction), diff seals (that took an extra week to arive), dif fluid (that had to be drained to access mounts because of the mono coque tube structure of driveline). No charge. lesson. priceless.

I do really wonder how man times I can bust it before they stop fixing it for free (fun anarchist mission anyone?) but I know I let the motor/turbo wind down more now than ever!

(bov helpful ?)

haha, yea so when i first got the car, those 3-4 launches, popping the clutch, i did at 6k wasnt a good idea...?

this is strange because I've talked to a few Mazda reps who were tearing the cars up during testing and she took all the abuse they threw at it, with the exception of the clutch after time. But that'll happen when you launch it several hundred times at 6000rpm.

Of course, you can't believe everything you hear either.

I had heard the same thing about the MS6's ability to stand up to multiple high RPM launches. Was it the launch itself or perhaps the speed shift?

well i have heard that klunking noise when launching at high rpms...i have also heard it when speed shifting into 2nd gear at the track and gunnin it around town every once in awhile...but my ms6 is in the shop right now for a cel and 4wd light

all I can say is if I have ANY issues with my MS6, it'll be my last Mazda forever. My 01 MP3 had issues, my MSP had issues.....3 strikes and your out, and back to Honda I go.

Any mazda rep that tells you they didn't have any breaking issues at their "test events" for the service managers and sales manager is flat out lying.

I know of some service managers that actually went around and wrote down all the vin #'s of all the damaged cars just to avoid accidently buying one.

Generally the first thing to break is the mounts (if you're lucky). After that it goes to the clutch. Then it seems to be the rear diff.

Mounts->Clutch->Diff.

Don't be an idiot and launch an AWD car that wasn't designed for it. You'll just end up looking like all the sti noobs breaking axles on youtube.

This is good to know Crossbow. Thanks for the info C.

I had my clutch replaced couple of weeks ago and I have not launched the car beyond 3000 rpm. The dealership said that they had another MS6 with the same problem and the Mazda engineers have been looking closer to this. Apparently, the clutch has been abused by the transporters (the people that move the cars from the ship to the trailers, etc.). They also found a leak in the axle....

i say rear diff is the weakest link in the car, they found metal shavings in mine...

ok look a-hole. back off. you dont know how i drive. and you are not paying for any of my car payments. so if i wanted it could cut the damn driveshaft in half. im sick of you thinking everyone but you drives their car like crap. i love my car and baby it. cept when I FEEL LIKE GETTING ON IT, SO BACK THE **** OFF!!

Thanks for the support, its all I got.

I am making the payments, I am working 75-90 hours a week, and I did get a little too excited once, after a month and a half away from my car. But please do not make those common ass-umptions about me or my situation. I was not "driving like a douche" intentionaly (but it wasn't perfectly smooth) but, I overestimated the durability of my components. The wheel chirp of popping 2nd was too much to resist after my "dry spell". You would try to feel every ounce of power too after the seperation. Anyway "opinions are like assholes, everyones got one", and I thank you for your (ignorant) opinion.

Relax with the name calling.

And FWIW, a performance car that breaks the first time you beat on it? Weaksauce. It's a poor design, and should be fixed at dealer cost if that's the case.

OK. Now that we all have gotten that off our chests, lets all take a deep breath and relax a little. No more name-calling thank you. No need to go and have this thread closed now.

Thanks all,
R
