also, do not buy the eBay solar powered ones, they're good for like month but eventually the battery goes bad and they're junk:

first thing to do is slowly open the lens cap and remove the screw so the LED can sit flat at the bottom of the cup holder







there are 3 wires, I connected only the black and blue (blue setting was bright enough) red wire was too bright



lift up the center console, start from the inside of the armrest, see link for instructions....

remove the OEM rubber coaster and drill a tiny hole and feed the wires thru and connect to your power source.....





get some butyl rubber sealant and apply on bottom to prevent rattling and also seal the wire feed thru on the bottom side







button everything up and impress your passengers with your lighted up water bottles





also if too bright cover up the top with some thin rubber gaskets to reduce brightness



in case you don't want lights, just place OEM rubber coasters over the LED and cover up....

honestly, I don't see anything wrong with it, and it's only $4.99 for two lights so what's the harm,

I appreciate Tomcat's write up and ingenuity,

I see people spending $$$ on the OEM Mazda night illumination in the footwells or expensive JDM map/eyeglass holder lights to dress up the rather dull looking or rather lack of OEM night illumination.....

I mean Mazda even took out illumination for the passenger window/lock switches for christ sakes... how cheap is that???....

I can confirm the solar powered ones are junk, I was stupid to try them, good for maybe a few weeks then after one very hot summer day the batteries overheated and wouldn't hold charge anymore....


nice write-up and not bad for just $4.69 shipped for the pair, I'd go for it, nice to have some ambient lighting to spruce things up to get the party going

I like Mazdadude's idea to get them to pulse to the music, there should be some sort of aftermarket sound sensor/power connector that can do that

Oh, I can appreciate that, writeup and ingenuity. I just don't get the reason for the light. I would think it would be too much in the dark.

what I can't understand is why anyone isn't questioning BLUE rear tail brake lights for a Toyota Corolla...

do they come in green? (wife's favorite color)

I've thought about a similar project using wedge 194 single LED w/the wide angle lens and gluing them either in the bottom or the side of each cup holder. If I did it from the bottom, they would shine light up to the headliner (if not covered); but if I did them from the side, somewhat near the bottom of the cup holder, they would not be too much of a distraction.

...of course the only downside to using the 194 wedge style w/the lens is it takes about a 1/4" size hole for them to mount/glue to.

I have some green 4" CCLTs meant for use in a computer tower for the underdash lights. I just need to find a good place to put them and their "electronics" box.

not sure how Tomcat did it, I don't think he showed it, but I'm guessing you have to add a fusetap and connect the LED's to the tap, see link below, it shows how to hardwire to a Valentine radar detector / DashCam but the idea is the same.....

or do what I did, I did the fuse tap and added a 12V BELL brand socket/spring clip power center like this, photo is just a sample, in mine, I actually cut off the cigarette plug and connected to the fuse tap wiring. After that I can connect Dashcam, LED, radar detector, etc...






I wouldn't connect to the cigarette socket in the armrest, that one is not "switched" meaning it still remains powered even after turning off the car....you may have a dead battery in the morning

oh sorry guys, I forgot in my write up,

I did a fusetap a while ago, see "blackcx5" post above for links, I followed those instructions on how to add a fusetap to the CX-5.

the links to the Valentine Radar and hardwire Dashcam was very useful.....

I like BlackCX5's idea of a "power center" that's a nice setup, the two built-in 5 amps fuses are good, those would pop first if overload or a short or crossed polarity is detected rather than at the driver footwell fuse box.

can't believe Mazda didn't add a switched cigarette socket underneath like the new CX-9 or a cigarette in the center dash like the previous CX-5's, only route is to add a fusetap or tap into the power supply behind the rear view mirror (there's a how to in the forum to do that.... I don't have the link right now)

there's an empty slot to add the fusetap.... thanks to Seminole
