4/4/04 Autocross Thread (Post Your Results)

Hey guys. To make things easier I made this thread where we can all post our info on how the autox went today. I think this was Tom's idea, so he gets the credit. Anyway, the surface of the place today was quite bad (sand/gravely) and I haven't learned how to autox the car well in traction limited situations, so I was pretty disappointed in my times. I'll post the results once they get up, but I wasn't really doing as well as I thought I could and should have. On the positive side though, I learned a fair amount and picked up some things I need to work on for next time. I definitely need to look further ahead. I went into first gear on my last run, and although I botched it (revved too high so wheels spun on the bad surface) I now know I can at least do it. Hopefully the next event will be much better with less understeer. I rode in my friends AWD car....wow I was jealous. Also got to ride in an evo :). It was quite nice, and e said I can drive it sometime. So although I didn't do well at this event, I think I learned a lot and I'll be able to apply it to the next event. Oh yeah, and I hit my first cones :). I hadn't hit any before. Hope everyone had a good day today, can't wait to hear about it. Just post it in this thread so we don't have 50 different ones.

No autocross for me this weekend. I skipped an OVR event so I could install my AWR goodies and take my dad to the NASCAR IMAX thingy. Still having trouble installing a couple thingies... got more work to do.

I made major driving breakthroughs last year when I had to race on loose surfaces up at OVR. The concrete was in horrid condition, gravel and rocky and where it wasn't gravely it was heavily painted. I ran there three times and learned more about car control than I could have in 10 dry races. Pay special attention when you race on those kind of surfaces it shows you what you car does at the limits but at slower speeds, making correction easier because of those speeds. Then on dry you just speed up the process.

Yeah, I was also running 38/35.5 F/R for tire pressures. I think I should have lowered them for more bite. The rear was also pretty loose at those pressures. First run was @ 38/38 which understeered too much, then I lowered the rears to 35.5. Had a nice slide at least :-p. What awr goodies did you get? I'm actually going to do STX because of the cheaper price of wheels and tires, which I need to get in the VERY near future because my street tires are getting owned.

I had a JAX event today at gainesville Speedway, on the test course that Grassroots Motorsports used yesterday for the $2004 Challenge. I won DS, had 2nd quick Stock time, and was #2 in PAX for the day, behind Mike King, who was 2nd overall at MRIU last year and had FTD OVERALL for the first day of the Topeka Pro Solo 2 weekends ago...

I ran a 54.6, Mike ran 54.2 in his STX WRX (these are raw times) and FTD was a 52.7 by Jesse Naughton (former STS Protege driver) in a highly modded MRSpyder. For comparison sake, the autox FTD at the $2004 Challenge was two cars in the mid 53s, all others 54 or slower. These were dedicated (although cheap) racecars modified FAR beyond most SCCA rulesets...

All in all, great day...
I'll get some vids up later (hook me up, Tom ;) )

Awesome! Nice job. Can't wait to see the video. How'd you like the course? Our course was ok. Nothing really special, nothing really wrong. Hopefully soon I'll have wheels and tires and stop eating up my re040s.

Ran terribly at the National Tour on Saturday - 2 DNFs and no clean run all day. (bang) At least one of the other guys running DS was in the same boat. Disappointing after some good runs on the practice course Friday but I guess it was to be expected - I'm trying to get the hang of left-braking and this was my first real go at it. Kept thinking about my feet and not the course. Being on street tires did not help my cause any.

Sunday was mostly clean - but once I stopped crashing through the third corner I started getting brake happy, probably cost myself around 3 seconds with that the last run. Needed another 1 or 2 runs, but oh well - it was all over Saturday anyway. With the 2 day format I think I beat a grand total of 7 or 8 people. Whoo-hoo >.< Oh well - getting the car to oversteer a bit at the last corner was a hell of a lot of fun, kind of makes up for the bad showing. :D

Real fun watching all the drivers that came out for the tour. Insanely fast bunch. Plus one of our local guys flew out for the Dallas rev-it-up saturday night & then came back in time to kick everyone's butt in DSP on Sunday by like 6 seconds...

Yeah, I had a nice little slide yesterday hehe. I need to learn how to left foot brake, but I don't know how to go about starting to learn, any suggestions?

I saw your name on the SCCA website, I was wondering if the MSP owner was a local member... Congrats anyway: you are only the 3rd or 4th MSP I've seen in NT or Prosolo results, including my own... 2 years ago, I finished 11th of 13 at the Atwater Prosolo, my first national event, so I know a bit of how you feel. National level seat time is even more instructive than any other seat time...

As for that DSP driver, he WON the MRIU at Dallas LAST year, 2nd there THIS year, and was 2nd at Houston BOTH years.... Brian Matteucci is an AWESOME driver...

Hopefully my name & car will be in more NT or ProSolo results - if not this year then next ^_~ I had a great time and even with all the foul ups feel like I learned a lot. Next time hopefully I will have decent tires and a bit more experience

Matteucci is a brilliant driver - I would like to say I know him, but so far I only see him occassionally at regionals - he's almost always entered, but it seems like he always runs when I'm working. Awesome to watch though - he's really smooth through courses, never looks like he should be setting the times he does. Was thrilled when they spaced out the last few cars on Sunday and I got to watch both his 2nd & 3rd run in their entirety - a 49 & 48 - I think the 48 was the best time of the day at that point. Really impressive.

I need to learn how to left foot brake, but I don't know how to go about starting to learn, any suggestions?
The guy that's been helping me out with my driving told me to do the following:
Start by working on pedal feel - when you come to red lights or stop signs pop the car into neutral and brake with your left foot. Try to stop as smoothly as you would with your right. It will take a week or two of doing this to get it consistantly smooth.

After that get into the habit of hovering your left foot over the brake after you're done shifting. I brace my heels together so my right foot knows something's there and doesn't decide to grow its own brain and move to brake without my permission. Then lightly tap the brake pedal whenever you make a turn - don't worry if it needs brakes, just get comfortable with tapping them left-footed.

Expect to slow down for a few events - its very tempting to brake more than nessecary when you're foot's right there. This was my problem on Sunday.

SCCA Chicago region had a good setup yesterday, but 45 degrees and quite windy. Made the tires slide some and I even had a run that beat a Viper GTS by over a second (he must have spun out, but I'm counting it!). At least the track was very smooth. I 3 runs in the first heat weren't that great, not smooth enough or looking far enough ahead. Second set of three I kept improving my time by over half a second each run. Best of day was low 57.xxx so I hope I won class.

Awesome, thanks. How do you learn how much brake and how much gas to give it at the same time?

I can answer that one.

SEAT TIME

Its all about experience for stuff like that. You either start conservative work your way up to coneage or you start with coneage and correct your mistakes until you reach that handling limit. Either way you'll reach the same place. The second way is much more fun.

Personally I don't left foot brake yet because I'm working on being a smooth driver with my right foot and hands first. Once I get my hands down and doing what I want I'll focus on feet. In your list of things to learn about autocross I think left foot braking should be near the bottom... stuff on top needs to be focused on and drilled before you go into advanced techniques. Looking ahead, braking right to set the turn, turning early... these are things that are much more important to master... even after that, proper cornering, slalom speed, etc... lots to learn before left foot braking should be learned in my opinion.

I have another answer: DON'T!!!! I left foot brake every event, but I almost never use gas and brake at the same time. Once you are comfy with the feel, and start to get over the too-much-braking problem, start trying to set yourself up so you don't need the brake in the corner: do your braking, quickly and aggressively (but SMOOTHLY) then get off the pedal, and use the gas and steering.

Over the last 2 months, I have made MAJOR progress in my driving, and looking at it, I think the biggest change has been my use of the brakes: less and less and less...

The link below is my fastest run from LAST week's event at Savannah. This was the fastest RAW run of the day OVERALL, but dirty. I DID get FTD based on other runs, though. Thanks, Tom!

That course looked awful! I bet the corvettes hated those ultra tight chicago boxes and half boxes.

You teached that cone real good mista

I did the OVR event on Sat (Drivers school) but it was the same course as Sun.

First: 49.7xx
Best: 45.7xx

I improved a lot, bumped my tire pressures up after the first run. (44 psi all around). My last run probably would have gotten me in the 44 sec range, but I pushed it too hard going into the last turn. Oh well, not bad for the first time out with this car, and my 2nd autocross ever.

Sorry I missed you Mallard. We had planned on going but spent the weekend doing our own test and tune with the AWR stuff. Was Todd Meade there (yellow STX Integra Type R from hell)?

You should come down to Western Ohio Region on April 18th for our Wright State autocross... the lot is supposed to hugeginormous. I'll be there regardless of weather, car, personally injury or threats... they make me.

Well I work in Wooster and I have family in Columbus so I'll be hitting up OVR events most of the time. Just less driving for me.

Todd Meade was not there on Saturday, but he might have been there on Sunday. Have you been to the Cooper Stadium lot before in Columbus? It is a nice sized lot and there aren't many light poles. If you make it up to an OVR event I should be there. I'm looking forward to a review of your new mods.

Stage 2 will be done by saturday evening. Thats the entire sway section and motormounts... then i'm done for a month or two unless I get at bug up my butt.

Hope to see you there.

I guess I should brag on the wife... We had a fun event on the 28, followed by a points event on the 4th. My wife took class both times.

Holy superspeed batman! She beat David... hows that possible? Dave is fast. And that SRT is no slouch. Major kudos to her.

She needs to take that MSP up to Cincy events and see if she can get some competition against Ian or Caleb in the ITR. If she can beat them she needs to get her ass to Nationals.
