3rd gen AWD discussion

:
2010 Subaru Legacy GT
ok well, i just wanna see how this pans out and what everyones thoughts and ideas are. xelderx was genuinely serious about this and i am interested in learning what constitues this drivetrain swap. lemme start this with this question and hopefully others carry on the questions. would we need to change the tranny to make this happen?

please no flaming, just curtious corrections. but hey, if someone is acting stupid, ya gotta do what ya gotta do...

this i must have..i require information...i must harness the power of AWD..haha..power of AWD..i'd go from 109WHP to like 80WHP..rock and roll

I have no idea about the logistics of the swap, but I must say this: Imagine a t3'ed up msp with like at least 300 hp and awd. Eat your heart out sri ;-).

i've been thinking about it too. i have to say i have quite an advantage over you yanks because my car is right hand drive so i can basically do a straight swap....money is an issue though :(

You'd need a complete trans with rear output shaft, complete rear subframe assembly, rear drive shaft, and possibly the rear the center section of the chassis. from what i understand from previous conversations on this is that the AWD version has a driveshaft tunnel built into the chassis that the FWD don't have. This would be necessary in order to clear the stock rear shaft. you might be able to get a custom carbon shaft made that's a little smaller in diameter to save space and possibly clear the chassis without the tunnel.

Does the AWD only come in the auto??

Yes, they all wheel drive option only came on auto tranny cars...I'm pretty sure on that one.

I would suspect that an AWD swap would be similar to what you have to do to a first gen. Change out the rear sub-frame and suspension. Plus tranny and add all of the AWD bits and pieces.

It is damn near cost prohibitive on the first gen cars, it'll be even more expensive for the newer models.

Good luck...

how bout an entire front and rear clip? ok i know that the sport 20 is a wagon, but just the subframe with the axle attatched. oh yeah and is that an independant suspension for the rear?

im with xelderx on this, im totally interested in this, was tellin me about it when i was at NC, this sounds like it would be worth the money, just think, rear wheel drive burnouts, lol, yup, itz a def must do :D

I'd wager it is, since that's why the Protege is so special. Independant rear.

As far as the swap, I'd wonder about the length as the sedan is a few inches longer than the wagon. How that translates frame wise I don't know.

Why not just get one imported for australia ? You would be looking at the cost of the MSP with the swap to AWD, at about 50k easily, with all the custom fabbing.

As opposed to importing one for about 25k for the price, shipping, conversion to US smog legal, and registering in the US. :D

Bet www.motorex.net could get you into the right location for one. All thier Skylines are NOT imported directly from Japan, they come from Australia. :D (but you didnt hear that from me)

Hmmm, I wondered how they got around that tricky dick BS that the US has on importing cars from Japan...

But I didn't hear that from you...

Basically, if you pay 100 grand for a 2000 r34. you paid about 40-50 for the car, 15k for profit, and the rest covers trans fees, smog legalization, registration paperwork, paying off the port inspectors, getting a few "ladies of the night" to mess up the back seat before you buy. ECt ECt :D

Um, that's why I'm not going to pay $100,000 for a 2000 R34...I'd rather pay $25,000 for a 323 Astine SP20.

Or better yet, track down one of those Miata SP, with factory turbo from Australia and have that sent over. The exchange was in US favor last time I saw...

Let's see, if I can find a used Miata SP for about $45,000 Australian???

the only problem with that is, if the the car has never been imported before you have to patition the government and show them why you NEED this car, and a US spec version wouldnt work for you. AND you have to write a letter to the car company asking permission to import the vehicle.

of course you could just import the car and transfer VINs:D j/k

Why not just buy a used Miata and turbocharge it?

Because a right hand drive Miata is cool.

And don't worry, I have ideas for my dream turbo Miata car.

Ok back to the AWD discussion. Corksport has assured me that they have an AWD manual transmission in stock. The AWD SP20 only came in auto trans...BUT no one seems to remember the AWD 626 that they sold in the late 1990's that was available in manual trans. Corksport is still looking for a driveshaft and a gas tank for me. All of the other parts that we need have been located. The A-spec chassis shouldn't have any problems accepting the driveshaft. If you look under the car there is already a large tunnel where the exhaust runs. I'll keep everyone updated on the status and probably do a lengthy how-to when this all comes together.
