3rd gen AWD discussion

Sorry about the SP20 thing...I got real lazy and forgot about the Aussie SP. Working for 911 I have a bad habit of abbreviating things. I'm into doing things that no one else has. Hell I built a 1988 Honda Hawk GT into a race bike knowing it would never win a race. Well it would have won a race if they hadn't banned the CR500 motor conversion for being unbeatable in WERA. My car has over 80,000 miles on it and the tranny is starting to feel it. I figured if I was going to replace it I might as well upgrade it while I'm at it. Thanks guys for all the support, I know I'm going to need it. Maybe while I have the car stripped down to the shell I'll paint it a darker silver...always wanted to do that.

xelderx, I salute you. I rode in a STI the other day and has made me want to put awd in my daily driver P5 (but doubt that I will due to downtime). As for the M3 test, it's a test that apparently few ever take or pass. If they did Boyd Coddington would be out of business(because no one would be buying his cars or building rods and buying his wheels), West Coast Choppers would be out of business, Orange County Choppers wouldn't be on the air cause they wouldn't have a business, Ferrari, lamborghni (sp?), Gemballa, AMG, Lotus, etc., would no longer be in existence. These vehicles all cost more than a M3, and all are very special. It's because some people have a need to do something that no one else has done no matter the cost or effort involved that we have so many special vehicles to appreciate and drool over. I love the human spirit, especially the part that likes to thumb it's nose at those who tell it "no it can't be done". Because we have gone to the moon, exceeded the speed of sound, proved the earth was round, given new life to people previously considered terminal with transplanted organs, built skyscrapers, tunneled under the english channel. We've built objects of function and objects of beauty that were considered impossible feats, just to see if it really could be done or if it was really impossible. So folks don't slam him for what he wants to do...it's not like he's spending your money.

oops (hand) just noticed the posting dates on this thread...oh well guess I was a little late.

i still want to see an AWD Protege stateside. its like the friggen protege holy grail :D
Yes it is. The sedan would be the car to do the conversion on just to save the extra weight, but the Pro5 would make a much better sleeper. Time and money are keeping me bound to other projects at the moment, but my bills are slowly getting paid off and it's only a matter of time before I have some more disposable income.

actually, y is the sedan heavier than the wagon? i was looking on edmunds and it had it that the wagon was lighter?

I would like to see this AWD conversion done!

I'm pretty sure that the sedan is at least 200 lbs lighter than the wagon.

According to Edmunds

Protege 5 Protege ES MazdaSpeed

curb weight 2716lbs 2634 lbs 2843 lbs
length 170.5in 175.3in 174.6in
height 57.8in 55.5in 55.5in

all other dimensions were the same.
Don't know if these are correct, just what Edmunds reports on their website.

xelderx,

I was wondering have you seen the rear differential yet? ie looked inside to see the actual differential inside the pumpkin? I'm wondering if it's the same as the differential in the fwd tranny. If it is you might be able to use a Mazdaspeed LSD if it's an open diff.

I haven't seen the internals yet. I believe it is related to the Tribute final drive. I think thats an LSD setup too.
