Protege5 2003
Hi, I have a simple question ...

(I have a protege 5 2003, with 65 000km on it)

50% of the time, my 3rd gear block... it just doesn't enter. I need to slowly put it throught (2-3 seconds) or come back to neutral and engage it again ..

my car wans't doing it before and my other gears are fine ... Now I would think it could be the clutch, but since every other gears are fine I don't think it's that ...

could it be the synchro ? (sometimes the gear grind a little in 3rd) The car is doing that since 2 months and I'm a little tired (deadhorse

but my p5 is a 2003

**hu huh, there was a post about a TSB ... anyway ... dunno if it's applicable to me because my p5 is a 2003 :(

Ok, sorry to threadjack, but as we're on the subject of tranny problems, every once in a while (maybe once a week), I grind the 1-2 shift...I know, sounds like I can't drive a stick, but I've been driving 1 since I learned to drive lol. It'll grind, so I back it into neutral, release the clutch, push it all the way back in, then try it again, and it'll still grind. I have to let the revs drop down a good bit b4 it'll go in (never checked the tach to see where, because it happens so infrequently). Any1 else have this problem? Also, it doesn't happen on any other gear, shifting up or down. Thanks. (jacked)

have you tried doing a full tranny flush and put in some better tranny fluid?

no, but I"m getting info on that on a different thread lol

My tranny won't go into rev. sometimes and I have to put it back in neutral and try it again. Is this the synchro as well. I don't really know what a synchro is and this is the first stick I've ever owned ( or driven).

this is normal and a lot of stick shift cars do it. If you put the tranny into first every time before hand it'll work fine, since the ratios on 1st and reverse are the same or something (thumb)

Mazda's tranny fluid is the biggest problem. so many people had problems that just magically went away with a fluid change to either Redline lightweight shockproof, or GM/Penzoil syncromesh. Myself included.

I'd start here. its cheap (relative to tranny work) and easy.

Yeah, I"m planning on changing it when I do my oil next time...

If I'm not mistaken, reverse has straight cut gears that don't mesh as nicely as the rest, and it's sometimes hard to get everything to line up right on the first try...

i'm having the same issue with 3rd gear. you can feel it grind if you try to put it in fast. I have new tranny fluid in there, but forget which brand. Where can I get the GM stuff? I've heard they're the best out there.

third gear is the easiest gear for me to shift, but forth is not... I can't put in 1st gear sometime even I step on the clutch all the way... so bull s***...
