30K Mile Tuneup

Sounds like it.

Course I find more enjoyment in actually performing service myself. Nothing like learning about a engine or cars in general by working hands on.

When my Saturn skip a timing causing the piston to "kiss" the top, I had it rebuilt at the Dealer (warrenty). But went in with them to watch and learn about the engine since they were tearing it completely apart. Really enjoyable experianced and learned alot about the inner workings of a engine.

30K is pretty basic,

That list covers it well....the tranny is debatable, some will tell you 60k and some 30k. I kinda feel that it's a personal descion. The fuel filter may be a little difficult too, im not sure if it's an in-tank unit of out-of-tank unit, haven't checked. BTW in response to the dealer comment previously made, take it from an X-mechanic and service writer, the fluids and tools are typically the same as what you get a most parts stores and a compentent shade tree mechanic can do just as good a job on basic services like a 30K

Yeah, for the tranny, I figured I would switch over to synthetic and forget about it till the odo hit 100K or so.

The fuel filter is in the engine bay, so it is no biggie... It sounds like you were thinking fuel pump, since you said in-tank..

The prices people quoted sound awfully high, since labor at the dealership truly must be awful... From my list, so far, here's what I paid for the materials:

1. Flush and replace Anti-freeze --
(2 Gallons of Anti-freeze $10.00)
2. Replace Transmission fluid with Redline MTL --
($24.00 for 3 quarts of Fully synthetic, shipped.)
3. Replace Spark Plugs with OEM NGK's or Bosch +4's --
(OEM NGK's $20 from Napa, and I bought an extra in case I cracked one)
4. Replace Fuel Filter--
(From Napa, $19.00)
5. Replace PCV Valve--
(Autozone, $4.00)
6. Clean Throttle Body--
(Sythetic Spray cleaner from walmart, $5.00)
7. Clean K&N (It will have been in there 10K by then)--
($8.00 for a recharge kit.)
8. Inspect Belts, Hoses, Brakes etc... Just like at Oil Change.

Grand total: ~$90.00 + the 1.5 hours it will take me to do all that.

I have no problem with getting something done like that at the dealer, but their prices seem awfully high! The stuff is simple enough if you've done anything remotely similar before.

some vehicles have in-tank filters on the fuel pumps, ie no external filters...wasn't sure on the protege since i hadn't looked.

Gotcha, I figured you would know after reading alot of your other posts... Damn I bet a filter in-tank would be really nasty...

To change the Fuel Pump in my truck, I actually found it easier to take the bed off, rather than drop the 25 gallon gas tank... LOL.
I sure am glad the filter is on the frame rail and not by the pump on that gas guzzling bastard...

hehe, Hint: Empty the full tank before attempting in-fliter replacement. Friend and I did this on his DSM, where we thought we could fit some drums under the tank to empty it. Nope, not without something more than wheel jacks.

It got the point were we were using milk containers to transfer it.

It worked ok...but eventually we couldnt keep up and just busted out laughing at the whole thing as gallons upon gallons of gas empty in the driveway.

Oh the young days.

Fuel filter

Are we sure the fuel filter is in the engine bay? I brought this up on the protegeclub and they all told me that my P5 had an in-tank filter. Can someone post a pic of where it's located in the engine bay on the P5?

Thanks,
Curt B. Shumaker

I'm glad you and ESGuy said something... That damn thing is right in the middle of the fuel pump assembly (in tank) according to my shop manual. I'll be damned.

The one I have from napa looks like it would fit in-line just about like my old Probe GT did... Well, I guess we can scratch Fuel Filter off the list, as I was going to do that for good measure anyways, sorry about any confusion I may have caused... I'm glad you guys noticed that!

Cheese.....

That quote is from my Mazda Dealership. But I think I might be able to save about $30.00, for a total of $220.00 (hopefully).

1.) I have a CAI, and I just installed it a couple weeks ago, so I don't need a new Air Filter.

2.) I don't change my oil until about every 3500-4000 miles. But the dealerships computer only allows oil changes in 3000 mile increments. So basically, my car has 30278 miles on it right now, and my next oil change (according to their computer) is my 30000 mile tune up. My next oil change (according to the sticker they put on your windshield) isn't until 32224 miles.

Okay, if you've managed to keep those numbers straight, here's my idea...

I'm driving to Florida for spring break. I don't plan on hitting 32224 miles before I leave, but using the 30000 mile tune-up before I go would be a good safety check for the long trip ahead. So I'll have them do the 30000 mile tune-up, without the oil change, go to Florida, come back, and get my oil change at 33,000 miles...thus back in sync with their computer.

Anyway, even if ya don't follow me...let me say this....$500 for a tune-up is alot compared to the quote they gave me...here's a copy...

What gasket is being replaced on that list?
Also what does "Fuel Filter not servicable" mean? Does it mean they don't do anything at all to it?

Yeah, i THOUGHT that our fuel filter was in the fuel tank..it came up awhile ago. How much would it cost for the dealer to JUST install a new fuel filter? Are there fuel filters that are better than stock? Such as K&N for example?
