well i guess becasue i own one i'm gonna say i like the 5 better, but i really do, from a pure styling standpoint. i think the 3 looks like some other cars out there right now. the 5 was , i think, different looking. now if they come out with a mazdaspeed 3 in the next few years....i might bite on that!!

The three looks gay on paper, better in person but the protege was still the most popular Mazda at the time. It shouldn't have been canceled.
New 3 versus PRO 5
I personally don't like the new 3 exterior design. I am not biased due to the fact that I own a Protege 5 but if you look closely at the "PT Cruiser HOOD" its ugly.
I hate how the hood is shaped and raised like it is.
Very cool though that they installed a 160hp engine. Why wouldn't Mazda have installed the 160hp engine in the Protege?

The 3 hatch looks nice. I don't care much for the sedan. Being that I've driven neither, these comments are purely based on aesthetics.

The 2003 Protege 5 looked so good esthetically that I got rid of my 1998 Acura Integra GSR (174hp) for it!
Not because I am nuts but I wanted more room with good access for friends, luggage, etc. I had the intention of purchasing a turbo regardless....
Would I consider doing the same for a Mazda 3?

There's nothing wrong with the 3. I drove both. The 3 is a little quieter and smoother. The P5 is a much better handler. For me, the 3 was just another car, but the P5 had its own personality. The P5 begs to be driven into corners. I like the P5 better visually as well. I did prefer the roominess of the 3. Oh, and the gauges on the 3 were pretty cool.
The P5 reminds me of some of my favorite cars that I have owned in that it is a driver's car. Like my 240Z, it's not very fast, but it begs to be driven.
