k guys, today was pretty cold here in va. it was about 30 degrees. this morning i let my car warm up for about a min or 2. i put it in reverse to get out of the drive way... driving down the street just fine in 1st gear hit 3k rpm (usually shift at) shifted into second and MY 2ND GEAR GRINDED! it was just bad, but BAD BAD... almost about to cry bad... i was like wtf... i didnt even enter 2nd as soon as i felt the grind i took it out into neutral. n tried to double clutch and it happned again. i let the car drop to about 10 mph, or less dont remember, and shifted it in ok.. still a little bit of a grind. does anyone no wats up? i searched and found if u redline to much it puts alot of wear into your 2nd sycron cause the ratio difference in 1st and 2nd are alot... not sure if its true or not. but i do tend to redline a bit, at least once or twice a day... sometimes i dont sometimes i do, to lazy to shift into 3rd and 4th. btw im using mobile 1 syntethic. i read alot of people have problems with this gear oil. plannin on switching to redline. anyone think this will fix my problem?

shift slower...

when my second started to grind, i used redline mt-90 tranny fluid and it helped a lot

Redline didn't help me one bit. I grind all the time.

Must be all that granny shifting I do. (hand)

ya i granny shift too... think my tranmission is gone... today i let the car warm up drove about 5 mins n it was fine. today was like another 30 degrees here. and driving for about 30 + mins only like 2 or 3 times it grinded in 2nd.... got to change the oil. anyone else?

i've had a second gear grind for 20,000km, all weather & all temps, all speeds of shift, no matter on the rpms during the shift. not every shift. but every 50 miles or so it'll grind. Looks like it's a common problem. Hopefully you've got some time left in your warranty!

ya today wasnt as bad... still cold. now im grinding in 3rd. might also be my clutch about to go...... my car just has to many dam problems.

my third used to grind no matter what. i changed my fluid to two quarts of penzoil syncromax, (the one for gm vehicles) and one quart of lucas oil stabilizer. after driving for about five minutes, i never heard third grind again. try changing your fluid. it cost about 25 dollars if i rember correctly.

penzoil synchromesh not sychromax , hehe :)

where did u get it? also that stabilizer is that the stuff u see at autozone n pepboys and stuff? also your completely not grinding? even at high rpms.

what exactly is granny shifting? never understood that statement. just real slow shifting? i mean i dont exactly throw the knob on every shift but i dont take 20 mintutes shifting either. and i know that came from the horrible fast and furious, but i remember him also saying double clutching. wtf is that all about? sorry, my mp3 was my 1st standard so im not all up and up on the lingo. sorry for the thread jack. but yeah my mp3 would try to grind in 2nd but whenever i would feel it wanting to do it i would baby it into gear and prevent it. only did it once a month or so though. not very often. and i was at 88k miles. my 11k mile msp is perfect onthe shifts though (thumb)

yeah i got my stuff at autozone, but i am pretty sure pep boys has it also. yeah its just called lucas oil stabilizer. i don't shift as hard as i used to, because i blew my trans twice, and i dont know how you shift, but it should work. i haven't grinded third since i changed my fluid. the only reason that i grind second once in a blue moon is because i shift faster than i can put the clutch in, which is my fault and i have changed my driving so it doesnt happen anymore.

I'd check over the clutch master and slave cylinders just for s**** and giggles

also bleeding the clutch can work wonders if it hasn't been done in a while

Is 57500 miles on a 2002.5 that has never had it bled "a while"? I should look up how to do this so when I get back to school I can do it in my nice warm garage instead of trying to deal with it in the cold and snow here.

lol its cool man, double clutching (wat i read) is when you shift into first, then going into second, u shift it into neutral. then release the clutch. then u push the clutch back down, then shift it into second. thats what i read when u push the clutch twice... not sure if im right or not though. i do that. granny shifting im guessing is when u shift it regularly. when u shift from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd etc. not sure though. someone correct me if im wrong.

but why would you do that? i dont understand. doesn't that just waste time and eventually your clutch for the double usage?

double clutching is useless on all modern cars. it is best used for trannies WITHOUT synchros. since we have em...no need for double clutchin.

We have 2nd gear synchros that hardly work. Hence double clutching can be useful.

is that a proven fact? or is that just what we think? i too have problems shifting into 2nd and now sometimes 1st when just sitting in neut at a stop light. My second gear sometime just won't engage AT ALL so i just skip to 3rd cuz i CAN NOT get it into 2nd any ideas there?
