yea so yesterday im driving and my 2nd gear pops out...i thought it was me being reckless with the clutch so i take my time and shift perfectly and it still didnt it after a few tries....i took the car to the dealer this morning and the service guy drives it around with me and i was so glad it did it to him...sometimes s*** doesnt happen infront of service guys but it did this twice and he said that its probably not the clutch since the other gears are fine..so i left the car and its gona be a few days...i have a rental now 2.0 sentra and its so funny.........anyone have a idea of what may be wrong with the tranny?

I was at the dealer and saw the inside of a RX-8 tranny with 2nd gear all chewed up. The tech said the guy must abuse the piss out of it since he has a RX-8 as well and hasnt seen that happen before.

It may be something stupid but atleast we have warranties.

That sucks! I can't stand our cars' first gear. Would rather that one go out so I can always go with second gear starts. How many miles do you have on your car?

7700..i dont thinks its abuse...only thing they would account me for is clutch wear..but gears?! id imagine its covered and if they say other wise im def not payin for it and gona make sure its warrantied...im sure it will be fine....i drive my car normally with the occasional 1-4 quarter mile sprint but other than that i never power shift or do anything out of ordinary for the car to do this....plus i got the extended warranty and when they finish my car they are installing my Mazdaspeed cai for 95 dollars...

my shifting become really hard when i reach 3000 miles, and i brought it to dealer. but the problem solved when they replace the engine mount and retorque the other two. now the shifting is smooth and crisp

i just called the service guy and asked him if he could tell the guy working on my car to check out the motor mounts to make sure they were working properly etc. im going to order the shifter bushings and motor mount inserts next week which will help my shifts...i just ordered my MS cai too....(thumb)

my shifts have been rough since day one. I've always wondered if someone who test drove the car before me didn't know what they were doing.
But I figured it's just the car.

Sounds like the 2nd gear synchro is toast, not a clutch or gear failure.

Sounds like a sychro problem to me as well but then if that were the case it would prolly effect the shifting of second like he said as well as 4th possibly...

yea my dad thinks its that too but, and i didnt think it was clutch cuz all the other gears are fine....how does the syncro go about messing up or breaking?

Grinding gears is what caused my tacoma to ruin the syncros. It was my first manual and I messed up on shifting here and there combined with a supercharger and I killed mine but it was a warranty item.

wow, i was just about to start a topic about this. My car started having a problem about 2 weeks ago with second gear but it would happen real randomly and not that often. When i first had this problem i wasnt really paying attention and wasnt sure if it was the cars fault or my fault because shifting is second nature for me and i dont think much about my shifting because its something i could do in my sleep. So after a week went on of having this problem i have been paying 100% concetration on every shift i make when it involves second gear and only second gear because thats the only gear that this problem has occured.

So in this last week of this problem being more consistent ive been able to realize when this problem happens and decided that this is a problem that is definately not mine and is obviously the tranny and that i have to take it in to get fixed

The problem ive had is only during downshifting and never during acceleration. It happens when im slowing down, usually for a corner, and not during high rpm downshifts. It occurs when i shift from nuetral or 3rd into second gear around the speeds of 5-15 and is noticed when i realease the clutch. I have been paying great attention to this problem and to make sure the problem wont occur i will shift into second and make sure the clutch is completly depressed and i am sure the shift knob is securley engaged all the way into second and then continue to hold the shift knob securely in second and realease the clutch slowly and when i proceed to release the clutch the shift knob will be grabbed from my hand and abrubtly thrown back into nuetral/partially second and make a grind noise. Its weird to me that the 2nd gear only has problems during downshifting and not during upshifting... I was waiting to make sure this was definatly a problem of the transmision and not of my own, but now i have determined 100% that this is a malfunction in the car.

This car was built in jan 07 and has 8500 miles

go to dealership it's prolly shift linkage. That's what happen to mine with 1800 miles. It got stuck in second gear. I think the factory didnt tighten enough when they were built. After fix haven't had a problem goodluck

the service guy that drove it was shifting down to slow down at speed bumps and stuff and it did to him, 2nd popped out when i accelerated....either way its getting fixed and its good to know for future reference when, or if i ever get a non warrantied car and mine runs out.

I work in a truck dealership and we've had eaton fuller tranmission speacialists come in here and rider with the driver because they have problems with there tranny popin out of gear especially 4th and 7th...well do you guys leave your hand on the shifter while cruising down the road after you hit 5th or 6th....? Well these guy road with these drivers and noticed they were leave the palm or there hand on the shifter while being in OD and it was wearing out the 4th and 7th syncro causing them to pop out of gear....just a heads up may not be the problem in your case but thought i would let you know.....

the service guy asked me if i leave my hand on it and i said yea...he said it could be pressure applied to the plate causing it to pop out but he did it without holding and it popped out...so he said "theres definitely something wrong here" and gave me a rental

Waa? Leaving your hand on the shifter shifter causing it to wear out. I dont' buy that unless you're pulling on it towards the neutral position while you drive...

Well i dont expect you to believe me im just letting you know what i know and have seen from experience i was a Diesel tech for 2 years...and an have been to school for auto and diesel technology...What leaving your hand on the shifter does is when in gear cruising down the road at highway speeds 55-70mph this puts a slight amount of pressure on the sliding clutchs and syncro's causing them to wear out! Like i said this may not be your guys issue but to an 18 spd tranny it is....But a tranny is a tranny no matter how many gears you have catch my drift....But with your vehicle being this new i highly doubt its from resting your arm/hand cuz these trucks that we service have more the 500,000mi on them...
