2nd gear is ******!!

I dont double clutch, my problem with the grinding occurs from second to third in about 3500-4000 rpms, not all the time tho, very rarley.. My question is if I upgrade my tranny oil to royal purple, for example, shouldnt this "better" lubricant illiminate the problem?

Worked on my rsx typeS when I was boosting it...

Also, If I upgrade my clutch pref. Exedy stage2 if/when it comes out, and I still have a synchron problem, and the dealer sees I have an aftermarket clutch, can that void my warrenty on my trans?

They pulled that BS on my brother and he has an evo.
I am not sure about the warranty stuff at all because I've never owned a car that had warranty.

BUT, definitely upgrade your fluid! My transmission would not have survived with stock fluid in there.

You don't have to double-clutch to rev match downshifts. You can single clutch and rev match just fine. There are two ways to do that. Put in the clutch, shift to desired gear, blip the throttle to rev match, then let out the clutch. The other way (which is quicker), is to push in the clutch, blip the throttle (this can be done very quickly with enough practice), shift to desired gear as the rpms are falling, then let out the clutch. Both these methods when done right will achieve perfect rev matches with very little wear on the synchros.

thats what i do....6th - 3rd around 50 mph i match the rpms while i hold the clutch in...i shift in around 4-5k rpms and it goes in smoothly without any jerks or grinds

All I can say is watch the videos I linked. A guy who know what he's talking about gives good advice.

Afterall, YOUR 2nd gear is ****** and I suggested some preventative measures.

not anymore, mazda fixed it...and it was because released the cluitch and gear wasnt in all the way and grinded really bad and broke some teeth

Yup. Double-clutch on downshifts.

You can, but the synchros have to do more work, so technically speaking they will sustain more wear.

On a brand new vehicle you may not notice any symptoms of wear for a long time; however, long-term this may not be good.

I think it's just about the extent to which you are willing to go in order to treat your car well! Like I said, some transmissions are very robust and will do the job reliably regardless of how you treat them. The Protege transmission is crap, so I want to make it last the longest.

Also, watch any circuit race where they show the guy actually driving, you'll see that he's double-clutching on every downshift.

Here you go! These videos are on Google video right now. They were once on Standardshift.com, which is where I learned about them:
http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=standardshift&num=10&so=0&start=0

I think some of them repeat in this Google search, but make sure to watch all of them because this is all you need to know. This guy drives fairly aggressively. You don't have to do that :D, just learn the idea. Hehe.

Double-clutching (heel-and-toe) at play (Pros Racing stock cars):
http://videos.streetfire.net/video/ba8f93f0-10cd-41ad-ac35-986e015972b1.htm

I always double clutch under heavy load situations -> going from 6th to 3rd, for passing, etc. From what I know, the cars on the circuit are required to double clutch as the race-spec transmissions lack the syncros. As someone else mentioned earlier, our cars technically don't require engaging the clutch twice thanks to the syncro. (depress the clutch once and rev-match)

I still use double clutching anyway in case I leave the IT field and join the pro racing scene. keke~ *^_^*

Okay, so why do you post threads? To tell the world you can't drive a car?

I think it was a good post since now I pay attention to mine and be sure its always fully in gear.

Thanks again for the post and the heads up clos561.

Im lost, you took your car into mazda because of your "2nd gear grinding" and they replaced your tranny with a new one? Or fixed the problem by replacing your synchron?
