2nd gear grinding

i had started a thread not too long ago regarding the same problem. a couple people said to double clutch or match the revs, i tried all of these as well and nothing worked. here are 2 more things you can try: before downshifting right into 2nd, throw it in neutral for a couple seconds, let the synchro do its thing and then drop it into second. this works for me but again, its by no means a fix. there's got to be some kind of design flaw because the downshift into 2nd definitely feels forced. also if it does it when up shifting put the car into higher revs between like 5 and 6g. that usually smooths it out as well. i know this isnt much help but just figured id let you know your not alone. hopefully someones got a cure.

I'll take a stab at this one. Not a transmission expert.

Sound like a synchro issue, and it is my understanding that eevery gear has its own synchro so you prob have only the one that is going bad. Transmissions are extremely complicated (at least to me) and there could be any of a number of other more mechanical problems. The problem is you may have to get some one to drop the trans and open it up to properly diagnose it, and that is going ot be expensive. I know that the guys that race the 8 (seriously, not casually) have had big problems with the 3-4 gear changes, but maybe this is related. Not much help, and sounds expensive. Hope this all works out well. Post your results, experience as you find a solution so others can learn from this. Obviously this stuff is not common knowlege. Good luck!

Call your local Mazda dealer and ask them for an appointment to look in to it under warranty?

Wikipedia says: "In a motor vehicle, the term powertrain or powerplant refers to the group of components that generate power and deliver it to the road surface, water, or air. This includes the engine, transmission, driveshafts, differentials, and the final drive (drive wheels, continuous track like with tanks or Caterpillar tractors, propeller, etc.). Sometimes "powertrain" is used to refer to simply the engine and transmission, including the other components only if they are integral to the transmission. In a carriage or wagon, running gear designates the wheels and axles in distinction from the body."

If the "warentee extension" you are talking about is the 100,000 mi one, then it does not cover the transmission.

Your Factory transmission warranty ends at 60k miles. If you got a extended warranty from the stalership take it in and tell them whats going on. They might tell you your getting a new transmission. But good luck with that. All in all the tranny is bad and you might just have to adjust to it. You cant bang the gears on the 8.
