2nd gear grinding

Is it just my car or does anyone else grind it into 2nd gear?? I know how to drive a stick and ive never grinded the gears before but lately every once ina while while goin into 2nd it does it. Only 2nd tho.

My car too. I only get the grind going into 2nd while driving like a jackass. I am not any nicer to any of the other gears, but it only grinds 2nd.

I have even taken extra time to make sure the clutch is to the floor before I put it in gear. By taking the extra time it seems to decrease the amount of grind, but it still grinds. During normal people driving it does not grind.

Just started having this problem about 6000 miles ago. I was told it might be a worn bushing somewhere.
 
I must add I noticed this about the same time I changed my gear lube to Mobile 1 full synthetic. I dont know if that is the problem.

How are you driving when you grind 2nd, agressive, normal?

Do you have oem fluid in tranny, has it been changed?

Well normal for me is pretty aggressive, but i usually shift about 5000rpms but even if i shift lower it can do it sometimes. like you said though if i make sure that the clutch is in all the way it wont do it. and it doesnt do it all the time, just once in a while. I still have the oem fluid, what milage should i change that at???
 
Thats the first signs that my tranny was going. Better watchout, i had to replace mine, paid 2100 for it then got 80% back from dealtership after fighting w/ them. Mine went out at 15k. Just giving you a heads up and i hope you don't follow my path.

Well im at 49000 miles so i dont have any time to make the dealer fix it, Doesnt the law say that if u have something in for service BEFORE your warrenty is and then its still bad after then they still cover it? i thought i remembered hearin that somewhere or maybe its just wishful thinkin. Ill be pissed if i get to like 55000 and my tranny goes out. (rant)
 
ya i have some odd feeling in second, when shifting to second actually, i wouldnt call it a grinding but it certainly feels different and not as smoothe as the other gears, for me it really doesnt matter how i drive, kinda of always does it and it never really used to, noticed it about 5k miles ago about 2k i change my tranny oil to redline, helped the feel of the tranny but second still has that weird notchyness
 
Yeah there is definatly something wrong with the second gear. I sometimes grind when driving above average. And like ultimazda3 said it isn't as smooth as all the other gears.
 
2nd gear synchro is out...take it to the dealer. Fought this fight with my Altima, make sure to drive it around the block when you pick it up before you head home...Nissan screwed mine up and had to do it over. Good luck!
 
Protege's have this problem a lot too. Mine does. Pretty sure it's the synchro. The second gear synchro takes the most beating because the gear ratio differences are biggest between 1st and 2nd. Shifting alot from redline in first will wear it out alot. I know I did :(

i do this a lot and have almost 50K on my engine/tranny; no problems. as long as your are not pounding through the gears nothing should wear in your tranny.....

its when you have to force into the gear that you are causing wear on the syncros and tranny internals.....

sounds like this 3 just has some tranny trouble/syncro trouble....
 
Yea, i have a similar problem. It isnt a grinding noise but i can feel it in the shift knob and it isnt at high rpm's it happens randomly...i dont know what it is but if you find out please let me know.

diddo on 2nd for my mazdaspeed. Mazda makes s*** syncro's for 2nd. Mazda seems to give people s*** for using windshield washer fluid that's not official Mazda fluid, so I don't think they will let a short shifter pass; essentially if the problem can be blamed on something other than the car, they won't fix it.
 
I had the same problem. Take it to the dealer asap. They replaced my 2nd,3rd syncro. My 3rd wasn't bad but they replaced it anyway. I only had 15k @ the time. Not really much of a fight but the service dude made it sound like they did me favor.
 
Same here. Bad 2nd and 3rd synchros. Been bugging my dealer about it for over 7 months. The first tech that serviced my car told me right away it was bad synchros, but his manager wouldn't hear it. He told me to bring it back in when it was broken and they'd give me a new transmission for free!!! What kind of service is that!??!

I have a service appointment in 2 weeks and I will do my best to have them fix it. Driving the car like this is no fun.
 
Does anyone know how to change the synchros? That sounds like an expensive repair?

I dont have a warranty, but I do have a second vehicle for down time or screw ups.
