Eclipse just posted their new AVX series headunits and I absolutely NEED one. My Carputer dreams have just about been nullified now. Heard some noise in this area lately, so I figured I'd let you guys know.

2494> 2din, 6.5"screen 20gb harddrive that automatically rips any cd you play.
2454> nav unit as well as dvd/mp3 capability

2404> movie emphasis with onboard 5.1 processing.

I've been drooling over these ever since the Eclipse rep dropped by my buddies shop while I was there, and jsut sorta spewed forth some pre-finalized info.

That sounds like the sickest thing going right now. What are tehy going to be selling for?

I personally like the AVN (one with NAV). According to 1sty we're looking in the 2k$ range for that one. Considering it's comparable to the Alpine in SQ and Vid quality, that sounds like a hella good price.

THey're all gonna be somewhere in the 1500-2g+ range I believe. Rather than having a range of quality or whatnot, they've each got their emphasis. Toobad there isn't just one that does it ALL. Andyea, sorry I meant to post a link, but we forget these things at 5:30am when we're not really sleeping. Fortunately someone picked up my slack.

And YES they are indeed posted on the front page at that. Hence my reasoning for posting about it. I hadn't really seen any finalized specs until then. I believ eit got posted perhaps atlike midnitght, as my friend and I were looking for info just yesterday and none was available.

Prior to eclipse offering this, My friend Found a company called Rosen who offered this style of unit, and he's had one for over a year now, Sooo clean and smooth (in a subaru legacy, no pro but ie's all the same, really) and integrated. We even made a RCA input plate that mounts on the back of his console so we could plug in his video camera and catch video of our day snowboarding on the way down from the mountain or whatever. I used to haggle him about not jsut getting one of the eclipse fold-out units, but having extra un-used space drove him crazy, and after it being there for awhile, I've grown to appreciat ethe cleanness.

I'm wondering what it would take to swap out that harddrive I've got a computergeek friend with a pile of the things sitting around. I figure 80gb would be plenty. I'm also wondering, though if there's a way to just drop in mp3discs and have it record them all or if you really have to just listen to the full song of whatever you wanna listen to. Also, not many discs are tagged, I'm kindof wondering how it'll handle that.

hrm...

a carputer is still better :p

let me elaborate:

a 20 gig hard drive is plenty of space for MP3s. thats like 5,000 songs. Why would you need an 80 gig? If youre thinking movies, think again. i 100% guarantee this unit will NOT let you rip movies to the drive. its violation of the DCMA and the MPAA and all those other retards wont allow it. If the unit does rip movies, i can assure you that the MPAA will be lobbying to hell to prevent it from doing so. although, they should offer a 40 gig drive as the top of the line unit.
The only thing i would say this unit has over a carputer is:
a) sound components/hardware. im sure the amp and other audio gear is top quality and would most likely lay the smacketh down on a PC audio setup (yes, even SB LIVE! EXTIGY AUDIGY 256K WITH 449MB BUFFERZ)

b) ease of use. even though you can use a carputer for anything (OBD scanning, EMS map programming, etc) im sure this unit will be very easy to use and super intuitive.

for the same amount of money, all around id still rather have a carputer than a dedicated setup like this. im not raggin on it, just personal preference. then again, im not that much of an audiophile either, so....

I guess my main emphasis is audio, hence my leaning toward the eclipse, my biggest concern is music. And as far as HDD size, I currently have 29.4 gb of mp3's and my collection's always growing. Especially since I've got my ripping streamlined now, and it nolonger takes me 20min per disc, I'm sure I'll eclipse 40gb by this summer.

Moreso than anything else, the inherant stability and ease of use is the main appeal to me. Don't get me wrong, a carputer's still something I'd really enjoy, all of that adaptability, and such is just incredible. Hell I'm still tickled about the idea of being able to run out to your car and burn a mix cd for a musically-stunted party or something, Heck there's alot of digital photography kinds of applications that appeal to me as well, but until they're more commonplace, and reliable, etc, I really like the plug'n play ease that this introduces.

You guys were ultimately shooting for something physically along these lines, though, yes? IF you ever get something that simple worked out, I'll agian be doing some serious re-thinking. It'll likely be quite awhile anyway seeingas I'm more or less broke at the moment.

yeah

i agree with all your points except i dont see how carputers aren't reliable

Perhaps it's just a notion in my head, but every computer I've ever owned has always had some form of vulnerability. Not even necc. viruses or whatever, but sometimes computers just seem to have a way of acting up. And I know especially my laptop was finnecky. For the most part it's never really an issue, but there's times when it can be a pain, and atleast it seems to me that with a pre-packaged stand-alone unit from a big company there's alot less tolerance for that. Perhaps I'm wrong, and quite honestly I'd generally be willing to put up with quirks, but hey, if I don't have to, all the better.
At anyrate, when my time comes around, I'll likely still be talking to you guys. The adaptability of a carputer is very appealing, and kind of hard to discount. Who knows what cool new gizmos may come along that an eclipse would never have a dream of adapting to for a couple of years, but with a carputer it's a matter of swapping a drive, installing a new card, or simply plugging something in. On the audio end of things, That is a pretty big priority to me, I suppose I'd just chop out my front-of-cupholder pocket and slap a deck in there. Similar to my home setup, I've had a cord running form my comp to my good stereo to play mp3's as long as I've been playing with them, so atleast a good 4years now. You don't think a really good soundcard would be able to hang soundquality wise? Because even money wise we're talking about $400 at least for a decent deck, not to mention the pain of trying to re-locate it.

I'd agee with that. The F'd up thing is that they have been running these style units with even more capability in Japan for years. Eclipse US basicly got sick of relying on panasonic to build there screens so finaly there Japanese counter parts gave them some new toys to play with. Since they're not really new in a world sense, they should be fairly reliabile

Keep us updatesd with how you like it and any quirks you run into. :D

Yeah, definitely! In particular, I'm curious how good the UI is. Whether it's "intuitive" or not, and whether there are things that you like/don't like about the unit as you proceed to use it.

Most dealers should have one of them up by now. You should be able to go take a look and atleast get to play with one a bit. Don't bother with Tweeter though, they dropped Eclipse, well I look at it as elcilpse dropped them :D

I have a brand new in the box Eclipse AVX2404 for sale. Let me know if you know of anyone who's interested. My email is azguppy@yahoo.com

where would be the best(i.e cheapest) place to buy a 2494?

20gb is plenty of room for me

can you rip exsisting mp3's to it or do they have to be ripped from the original?
