Brand new 5! (was 24 hours to 5)

Hi everyone.

I'm getting my new 2007 Mazda5 GT tomorrow. It's cheaper to take a ferry ride and get the car on the mainland rather than buy it on the island. That's not a typo, it's a leftover 2007 that the dealer is trying to get rid of. Since there's 0% on the 2008s, there isn't much interest in last year's model.

We had been looking at a used US import, but luckily found a new Canadian model for $1000 more. (And since it's new, I get the $500 MIR afterwards.) The only real difference is that this one is a manual transmission rather than the automatic the import came with. (Which is great, since I prefer a stick.)

It's replacing a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire (a rebuild) and will be my first new car and my first Mazda.

I'm looking forward to it.

I've got the car. Er, van? wagon? Whatever it is, we bought the 5 this weekend.

We decided to get Galaxy Gray instead of black - the black showed a LOT of dirt and microscratches. The GG shifts between a brown/gray and blue/gray and gives it a very smart appearance.

When we got to the dealer, they had to jump it since it had been sitting for a while. Apparently there's not a lot of interest in the 2007s. This one in particular had just 25 km on it. Brand new. Nice! It's our first new car. When the console said "HELLO" I couldn't help but think of the voice from Portal: "hello and thank you for buying me it was cold at night at the dealership"

After taxes and random fees, it cost just under $23k Canadian. Two bad things: we had to wait for over an hour to sign the papers. If we'd known, we'd have walked to a nearby mall. If we'd been from Vancouver, we'd have walked out, period. Second, I got no apology, nothing. Not even a ****ing quarter for the vending machine! I asked for change for a dollar, and not an offer of a free quarter was to be had. They were out of stock on the two accessories we wanted to buy, but did get the touch-up paint for $10. (Not thrown in for their cost of about $2.) So, hello, Freeway Mazda! (Pack a lunch.)

The 5 is an amazingly nice ride. I've driven an assortment of vehicles, listing out VW, Subaru, Pontiac, Merkur, and Lada, as well as some larger vans for work on occasion. I'm amazed at how easy it is to drive. Since I'm still breaking it in, I can't comment on some aspects. It took no time at all to figure out all the controls, and they are in good locations.

The mirrors don't adjust quite as much as I'd like, the wiper control requires reading, and the shifter feels a little funny. I'm also disappointed that the stereo doesn't play MP3s. It was made in 2007, not 1997. Actually, I had an MP3 player in 1997. It cost almost $250 in Flooz and came with a 128MB Smartmedia Card. MP3 decoder chips now cost $5 in bulk, Mazda. One other thing I've noticed is some wavy distortion in the windshield. A few trivial things, some of which are taken care of in 2008 models.

i too was *shocked* to find out my CD player can't play MP3...(boom06)
well. at least they made aux input for mp3/ipod...(drinks)

I too couldn't believe that the six changer cd player couldn't play mp3s. Is there some kind of upgrade that I'm not aware off?

But that is further impetus to replace the stereo with something that can *and* accepts USB memory and maybe does bluetooth.
